I'm starting to get fascinated by the thought of a gas less AR 15 with a side charger. Be a cool way to build a strait pull lightweight chassis rifle. Might be cool in Grendel or Valkyrie.

Be a cool platform for a suppressor. Am I the only one intrigued by this?

How’s the action going to work without the gas?

You can build a side charger, and still run a gas system.

Scratch all that, I think you mean you want to turn a semi auto into a sort of bolt action scratch

Simular is done in parts of the world where semiauto firearms are not allowed. I have watched a Video someone on another site where they were shooting "Nutered ARs" in a competition.

Put on an adjustable gas block and turn off all the gas on any AR. Viola, an AR you have to manually cycle.

Side chargers are cool.

Doesn't pique my interest, but here's one "solution":

I think what Scott is trying to do is run one of the cartridges that is on the oddball bolt face like the .224 Valkyrie or Grendel. There's not really a bolt action option. Keeping the bolt from receiving gas produces more muzzle velocity. You lose what I call the "gas-gun tax", which is the loss of velocity from robbing gas to operate the bolt.

Keep the bolt closed on a suppressed rifle, and it is quieter. Bolt actions, lever actions, single shots are quieter than AR's.

Pretty much. Doesn't get as dirty either, especially suppressed. I like the idea of a K31 and the AR platform ergonomic and cost effective to build.

I like it. You can always revert it later if you want. Tons of barrel, caliber options, great ergonomics. Go for it!

I think Scott is refering to rifles like talked about starting about 2:15 in this video. Posted by a past winning team member on another forum. "Nutered AR" is what he refered tp them as. No gasport and operated by a straight pull bolt

An AR straight pull for Jason, handle on the left. Starts about 4:40 into the video

I have a side charging 6.5 Grendel. It cycles and runs just fine. When I want to dump a live round, it’s an absolute b10tch to do. Because of my setup, I usually end up taking skin off my knuckles. I would highly recommend a longer handle to work the bolt.

Loosen your gas block and slide if forward just enough to cover gas hole and you can experiment without spending money.
I'm with BigPig on side charging - works nice until you have to mortar a round.

Yes. I may do a side charger and if I don't like it, I'll gas it.

Well, I ordered a barrel, side charger and handguard to build the straight pull neutered AR.

I went with an 20" ARP 224 Valkyrie. It is a 3 groove, 1-7.7" twist. It has a slightly shorter throat and was designed specifically for the 80 grain EDM. It's supposed to shoot lighter Varmint bullet well.

The barrel was on sale for $169, the upper with bolt carrier was $110, the Handguard was $105. I had a spare 6.8 bolt and a spare gas block. I just put the gas block on backwards so the gas port is covered. I had can of Alumahyde FDE laying around so I did the upper with it.

The Scope is a SWFA 3-15 FFP which I already had. I already had the lower and it has a CMC trigger in it. I spent under $400 on the upper. If I don't like it neutered, I can always flip the gas block around and add a gas tube.

This is just experimentation to me. It's a cheap way to build a lighter weight chassis rifle with a good barrel for the Valkyrie. Hopefully it shoots as good as it looks. I know it will be easy to clean. Going to start loading up some 80 ELDMs and 77 TMKs. Probably take it to the range next weekend.

May wind up being the only way we can shoot the ones we have now if the liberal left gets it's way.

Looks like a pump action with horrible ergos.

fwiw - the ban in Australia banned pump and lever actions.

Few years ago, I should a finer point on it. Depending on magazine capacity, they are in Class C or D. They have a gun registration and licensing scheme that is like a combination of mixing the NFA with the CHL laws of states that are not “shall issue” states here. Some people in some areas are treated one way and some people in other areas are treated the opposite.

Their system is a nightmare for the average person in urban and suburban areas. Some rural areas have more slack. The system is not going to allow the ordinary citizen to own a pump action AR like that video anymore than someone in New York or California.

Well, now I'm all confused. I'm an admin on a Marlin rifles facebook group. There are quite a few Aussies in our group that own Marlins.
