Doesn't John Wick use one at the end of the first movie?

Oh well, there is no arguing with dad.;)

No disrespect to your dad, but he's wrong. Get it clean, and close it up with staples or stitches. That's why they exist, is to close wounds so they can heal.

I hear ya ,That's what I told him.... That's what I've seen every vet do from TV and seeing other dogs. smirk

I got lucky. A NSTRA friend was married to a surgeon's PA. They used the staples but they couldn't be reused once they were opened. The friend gave me a couple of the staplers. I used the first one at a NSTRA trial on Morton Road near Katy on a GSP belonging to Scott Thomas. Scott left Katy and headed up to Kansas for a national championship trial. He took the dog to a vet up there. The vet looked at the cut and dismissed Scott without a charge, telling him that someone had done an excellent job. I was the designated stapler in NSTRA after that

Do the staples have to be removed once healed or do they stay and fall out?

Had a pup (16 weeks) tangle with either a hog or coon one night and got ripped up pretty bad on 2 legs, Vet said don't bother, the damage is too bad. The wife and youngest son used Vetericyn on him 3 times a day for about 3 weeks. Harley turns 8 in September, if you know what you are looking for you can see the scars but they are very faint. I started using that stuff when we had horses, it is pretty amazing.

I guess they could stay in but I use this.

He has a good care taker, she hasn't left his side since last night, she'll go get a drink and lay back down next to chief.

So you guys had one animal die from possibly not properly treating a wound (failing to close it up) and now it is a great idea to do it again?

Had one hit a fence and gashed his chest open like that, I cut the hunt short and took him to my vet thinking he would sew it up but he said it would heal better leaving it open. I kept it clean with peroxide and kept neosporin on it and it healed fine.

I would've take him to the vet last night or ASAP, but it's me, VS. My dad's experience...I've told him several times at least clean it and close it up and treat it with vetercyin on the seam... smirk
But.......in the end it's not much of my call to make even though he's me and my brothers dog.
I really would rather be safe than sorry.

That’s what I’m thinking also. It’s one thing to have a field kit for emergency’s to help your dog or yourself but after the sun comes up the next day, go see someone that can provide adequate care.
Don’t take long term care advice from an Internet forum. Go see someone who does it for a living.

Some here will argue that they did this and they did that but every situation is different. For some people a dog is a useful tool. For others they are true family members with skills.

Just my 2cents

I'm 16, Brother's older than me by 6 years, we got both of these dogs as pups after our old dog died.
I do most of their care taking since he works 12 or more hours a day. I asked him about taking chief to the vet, but He said 'see what dad says
He seems to be doing better today than he was last night, he's way more mobile, we did give him 200 MG of Amoxocillan last night , and half today. And I have also been treating it with iodine.

Like I said before I think it would be much better to close the wound, and treat the stitches or seam with the vetercyin...

I've done several. I always had someone to hold their mouths closed

You're wise for your age. Your dad should be proud. Common sense is certainly not the norm that I see these days. Keep up the good work and wise choices.

I hope my dog never needs any staples, but if she does I'll give you a hollar Bill,
and cook you a nice steak to boot. Only I'm not going to pay for your hospital
bill.

I took this dogs sister to get her spayed 2 years ago., the vet said she put up a good fight trying to sedate her...apparently they injected her, I figured they gassed em.
