I’ve always heard it works but never had a SC oven to try it in. Well, we’ve been in Point Blank cleaning old junk from mom’s house for two weeks, and I just snapped that the oven here is SC. The skillets here are in pretty good shape, but I found a deep skillet with a crust on the outside so here we go - The inside is needing some lard but is in good shape - Here’s the target. Some crusty old burnt on grease from long ago - So, let’s see what happens. I put in the cleaning cycle at 09:40, and I can already smell the hot oven now, 15 minutes later. I don’t know how long a cleaning cycle takes, so we wait impatiently for it to end and cool down. Film at 11:00!

We’re an hour and 7 minutes in, cycle is still active. The house is a little smokey, exhaust fan is on, doors and windows will open soon.

Well if this works I’m going to kick myself. I acquired two cast iron skillets from two of the restaurants I do A/C at and one was real bad I don’t know what they had done to it the other had just surface rust. I cleaned both with a scotch brite pad, steel wool, and sand paper on the bad one. Going for the last seasoning at this moment.
I found the other thread that you started a while back where you, Texas Lefty, and Bullfrog sand blasted some cast iron and used Y’alls info. The skillets are last looking great I just wish I had some lard instead of the old Crisco it has a slight odor.

I hear lard is the best but I have been using veg oil. I can get a non stick surface. My problem is the kids will try and wash the dang thing with dish llquid and screw it all up again. haha

Watch out with that self cleaning oven. They sometimes burn up components in the oven.

Veggie oil is tempting but in my experience it results in a brown sticky surface. Our testing showed that the cheapest good surface was built with 2-4 coats of lard, each one cooked. Coconut oil also worked well, along with most exotic high temp oils, but they are expensive. I use lard exclusively but I also cook with lard, so it’s always in my larder.

Veggie oil is tempting but in my experience it results in a brown sticky surface. Put a thin coat on and that doesn't happen. I use corn oil

You girls play nice!
If you’re gonna make a cast iron sticky, it oughta be the big one where we tested everything from 30 weight to baby oil.

Well I didn’t think about using coconut oil and I had some in the fridg. they are done seasoning and look great and I can’t wait to use them. Also no sticky surface on either one and that’s most likely because i used a thin coat.

The oven just finished the SC cycle after about 3 1/4 hours. In the cooling cycle now, the door is still locked.
Film at 11:00.

The Lock light is still on. I expected that. After three hours of both oven and broiler elements on, it is very hot in there. You could get seriously burned just from the super heated air.
