Question. Are pigs & Javelinas kin in any way? Thanks No, they are supposedly more kin to rodents. A simple google search would tell you they are not closely related To rodents. Neither one of them.

I think they are neat little critters. Shot one years ago it wasn’t very good meat, kind of like bear meat. I like to sit and watch them. We are getting a few here in Shackelford county now and they are not legal to shoot so I hope the population grows.

One thing I noticed in Foard county was they were pretty susceptible to predation, at least the young ones anyway. I would have the same group come regularly with young ones. The little ones tended to disappear. I also think they only have one or two young ones so they don't multiply quickly. If you have a lot of prickly pear, they will be more likely to hang around. They will also disappear completely for a while. I don't think they really migrate, but they do move around from time to time. They did like the corn and soybean mix I was throwing. Pigs would run them off from the feeder.

We used to cut out the largest tooth and give it to the paid hunters. We would tell them to take it to a jewelry shop and make a keychain with it. They look pretty neat!

Sure wish they would raise the bag limit on them. They are pretty prevalent in some parts of the state and it wouldn’t hurt to reduce their numbers a little bit.

A hunter on my deer lease last week shot two Javelina's in Foard county. I didn't even know we had Javelina in that part of the country. Has anyone else in West Texas seen Javelina? Just a reminder! Javalina's are considered a game animal and the same laws apply, the meat must be consumed. lol.

Horse spit or not, the rancher said they would tear holes in goat net fencing and this was 54 years ago and at that time there was no season or limit in Brewster county according to the ranch owner but had seasons and limits down around Laredo.

According the law, yes. Alligator, Javelina, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Squirrel & White-tailed Deer. Failure to appropriately take care of the flesh from any of these will afford you the opportunity to be ticketed for waste of a wildlife resource. GW will care lil' (actually nothing) about Javelina eating up all the corn. The big issue is "leaving them where they lie".

Javelina / Peccary are classified as game animals, there are 155 counties that have no open season. The counties that do, have bag limits and or a season. ---> TPWD Javelina

As previously mentioned...Javelina are listed as a game animal, and as such...fall under the same rules as all other game animals with respect to retrieval and preservation of the meat resource. You DON'T have to eat it...but you DO have to save the edible meat. https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/...s-regulations/laws-penalties-restitution
Waste of Game
It is an offense (Class C misdemeanor) if a person while hunting kills or wounds a game bird or game animal and intentionally or knowingly fails to make a reasonable effort to retrieve the animal or bird and include it in the person's daily or seasonal bag limit. It is an offense if a person intentionally takes or possesses a game bird, game animal or fish and intentionally, knowingly or recklessly or with criminal negligence, fails to keep the edible portions of the bird, animal or fish in an edible condition. It is a Class A misdemeanor to fail to retrieve or to keep in an edible condition a whitetail or mule deer, pronghorn antelope or desert bighorn sheep hunted without landowner consent; from a vehicle, boat or aircraft (including unmanned aerial vehicles); on a public road; at night; or with the aid of a light.

There’s been seasons and bag limits statewide on them since the 1930s. I would guess the rancher wanted them gone and didn’t want to risk getting the fine himself for poaching them
