22-250 or 220 swift. Typically not enough twist to stabilize what I consider good hunting bullets for the caliber.

The gun I have had the worst luck with on deer was a 30 carbine, the rifle my dad and brother shot their first deer with. I shot my first deer with it too, but we never recovered it. The side scope mount came loose and dad wasn't able to get it to hold anymore after that, been in the safe ever since. Damn that's been 21 years ago.

I'm also one who doesn't care for the 270, and the 243 is a close second. To me it always seemed like the ratio of recoil to bullet performance in both of those rounds are way off. And I'm not at all recoil sensitive. I shoot thousands of rounds per year, many in large magnums at targets well over 1000 yards away. But if I'm going to get thumped, I like to see results on the other end too.

That's just a case of using the wrong bullet. Ballistic Tips of old were simply too fragile for such a high velocity round. Put a proper hunting bullet in it and the 25-06 is a fantastic deer caliber.

some of these comments make me question how many deer some of ya'll have even killed....and saying a.270 is not a good round or is boring or underperforming is like saying.....is like saying......I really can't find a adequate comparison because its such a ludicrous statement. Very manageable recoil, good bullet weights, good velocity....its a great round and has been killing deer for almost 100 years very handily. Great deer caliber and a lot of elk and moose get shot with it every year as well.

back to topic.....

the 6.5 Grendel is my least favorite deer round. Was very underwhelmed with its performance.

the .243 is my second least favorite deer rounds.

the third is a .30-30. I've killed some deer very dead with it but its limited in range and power, but Its not something I would choose or recommend

I don't consider the .22-250 or .220 swift to really be deer rounds, but I've killed a lot of deer with the 250. Still don't consider it a deer round though

Yes it was and that is why I specifically included the bullet, but I still do not care for the .25-06 after that experience. Anything .22 caliber seems marginal to me. Can they work, absolutely, but a larger and heavier bullet increases the likelihood of a good result.

Sometimes it is just personal preference. I have a friend that hates the 30 caliber. 30-06, 30-30, .300BLK, .308... he just does not like 30 cal. He is a West Point Graduate, and Vietnam era Veteran, and probably has more hunting experience than most of us will ever achieve. I see no argument against .308 or 30-06, but that is his preference.

When I was a youth, the only center-fire rifle I had ever shot or hunted was a Marlin 336. I took two good sized bucks in 1984 and 1986. In 1987 we had to make a medical trip for my grandmother. It was the weekend before Thanksgiving, and none of us were even thinking about hunting. However, my uncle thought I should get away from the hospital and he took me on an early morning stalking hunt. I had no gear, so he hooked me up with his wife's 30 carbine and some clothes. I took a boiler-room shot and the deer bolted. My uncle thought he found him a few days later, several hundred yards away in the brush. Animals and nature pretty much got to enjoy that kill.

After years of hunting and shooting, i lean more towards bullet selection vs caliber. I'd rather shoot a deer with a 90gr partition than a 168gr BTHP. My least favorite deer caliber would be anything in a gun weighing over 9lbs

I cant say enough good things about partitions, have served me so well from 60 grains out of a 223 to 200's in a 300 wby.

The one hunting experience I have with it was not positive. It was my first shot at a deer and I could well have botched it. I was shooting for behind the shoulder. Deer was broadside facing the left. We trailed blood and never found him. The next weekend we shot the gun and it was just shy of a foot low and left. I finished the season shooting my brothers new 270 win and collected 3 DRT deer two bucks and a doe.

Dad and brother shot many deer with it though.
