I’m pretty sure a few million deer have been killed by a .22 ! Probably the most underrated of all . Although not legal.

6.5 Grendel. I love the caliber - perfect ratio of accuracy, recoil, and stopping power for hunting game in Texas.

Modest velocity and heavy for caliber bullets (what the old 6.5 sweed was and is over there) are a great recipe for a well penetrating hunting bullet. I wouldn't bat an eye at shooting a moose with a 6.5x55, or an elk or bear. I think much more of our perception of killing power is based on the size of the casing and I do not think its accurate at all.

He read it somewhere, along with how a .243 is woefully inadequate for deer hunting. I guess those that make these claims don't understand how to match a cartridge with the proper bullets. I've personally seen the landowner's son where we mule deer hunt kill several hundred inches of bucks the last 3 years with a 243/95gr Nosler Ballistic tip. Seems he know how to use it.

My dad bought me a 250/3000 savage in a model 99 F with a 6 power weaver scope when I was 7 years old. I am now 73 and still use it. It has killed numerous whitetails, a few mule deer, a couple of elk, and a few prong horns. If you put the round in the sweet spot it will do the job. Not saying it is my modern day pick but it sure brings back a ton of great memories.!!!! I have been very lucky.

I know a lot of big deer are killed with a .243 win.

I know one guy who has hunted the world over ( very successfully )and a .243 with a 80 grain Barnes is one of his favorite calibers.

I have been shoooting a 6.5x55 Swedish for years in a Rem Model 700 Classic. It is a great round for deer sized game. I haven't shot an elk with it but wouldn't hesitate to do so. My rifle really likes the Seller & Belloit factory round with the 131 gr bullet. I tried for years to beat the accuracy of that round with a handload but couldn't do it. I could equal the accuracy but not beat it so I laid in about 500 rounds of that ammo and have been happily shooting my way through it.

If you have never tried the Swede, do so. You can thank me later.

Why? I have personally killed 25 elk and have been in on the taking of more than 100 others. I have also taken my share of bear. I grew up in CO so shooting elk was a yearly event. I have also been shooting the Swede for decades. I would not hesitate to shoot the biggest elk in the woods with my Swede if it presented a good shot.

I’m not saying that it won’t work in given scenarios, but how many guys go on elk hunts and carry a 6.5 swede?

Growing up in Colorado you have opportunity to be much more selective than a guy on a 5 day hunt.
