Not sure how anyone could believe that hunters help keep deer numbers in check while somehow believing that harvest rules have no impact on the local genetics.

Numbers and herd ratios aren’t genetics, they aren’t cattle, you aren’t controlling dispersal or mandating who covers what and to what extent. If hunters could truly control genetics with their license tag on LF we wouldn’t have a spike tag in AR’s countries or cull 6s and 8’s etc. , impossible to eliminate a genetic trait out of a herd, culling never ends

HF, DPM, breeder bucks pens, importation live release etc.... tools to increase a genetic traits influence

If you hunt a property where the neighbor is hunting the same deer as you are, and you have no idea as to his management style, then good luck trying to manage your deer herd.

Curious as to those who think runts catch up, how long are you willing to wait? If you are a believer, but still cull middle-aged bucks for points, etc., how do you know those aren't runts that are still catching up?

It’s more about being a position to take a gamble on a deer then needing or having to cull him.

Better question is per this management plan of culling(frame, Pts, over all size) what exactly are your trying to accomplish? What abilities do you have to accomplish this set goal?

Question in itself is irrelevant to a hunter with a license and only a country tag limitation. Means nothing literally. What’s dan going to do cull a 3.5 3” crab clawed 8 pt with his ONE tag or wait and hunt the mature 6.5 year old 10 he has on camera.... if he chooses 3.5 year old when does he ever take a “non” cull, he is culling every year, bye his own admission of genetics he would never shoot a trophy because he is going to kill that 3.5 year Oct 1st so he can spread his genetics.....

But appeasement answer is “should” catch up at maturity. 4.5-5.5, environmental factors are always changing

This Buck was a spike last year. Will he ever be any good? I guess that depends on what an individual thinks. He will never be a 120 inch Buck but will probably make someone happy some day.

First buck we shot off our place looked a lot like him Don. We had 4 years of pictures of him. He was a 7pt the year we shot him at an estimated 5 years old and scored in the 80's or low 90's I think.

So...Chute'm or don't chute'm BOBO? I have 15.29 acres and want to make sure I keep my cc at 1/25th deer grin

I agree tho, you need the acreage and resolve to manage within reason, or maybe one of those tpwd co-ops deals they have with adjoining LO's.

Could you provide or do you have any missing link and convincing evidence that shows them as a spike?

I’m chute’m 99%(those 1 % times are the pinnacle or true management type properties). Vast majority of us would have more fun not over thinking the non applicable. You want him, chute’m. Arguing over theory that you don’t practice is counter productive. Why argue over a practice you will never actually practice in full, or have means too implement, or at very least why go to the Z of a management program and skip the other 25 steps.

You put a kid in the blind with me. We will be having venison for dinner, I don’t care if it’s a mythical 120” yearling. If you really want to see the lack of withholding hunt pronghorn with me....then kid or adult it’s chute’m ... unless they are running, then when they never stop, I get reminded of my chute’m motto:)

End of the day control what you can control, easiest is age.

If a buck isn't a 10 pt by 3 yrs old he's a cull. Try to keep a 1.5-1 buck to doe ratio. Plant lab lab and feed free choice 20% yr round. Ranch was old farm land years ago letting mesquite and weesatch come back, and planted about 150 acres of native grass mix. been spraying my butt off think finally got sunflowers, broom weed, cockleburs and giant rag weed almost gone and under control. Buried 3 ft predator wire to bottom of fence on outside. Killed ALL the hogs 3 yrs ago. Havent seen one in 3 yrs and they cant dig in. Or haven't yet! Killed All coyotes also. Have one or two get in after a flood thru my 1 water gap, but I keep a gut pile and camera on it so as soon as I see one they are pretty easy to get with the call and thermal. Bobcats play hell with me though. I've killed over 20 in the last 5 yrs. people who think they don't do damage on a deer herd are totally wrong. When I find a dead deer covered with grass I set up a camera and guess what shows up? I have seen them thru thermal climb up fence to first big square about waist high and just go thru fence. Cant keep them out, and cant kill them all just can control them. Don't think they will kill a mature deer but fawns and yearlings, yes. Here's a pic of a 4 yr old with the above buck behind him back in August. He was also a 1 yr old spike about like the other one, but since 2 his brows have pointed backwards so easy to follow him so far. [Linked Image]

If he's in a confined place he cannot get out of, he's a pet.
