Here's what I know:
some can be trained and some can't. some are natural retrievers. some are not ever going to retrieve.

Keep in mind the purpose. It's not just to get a reliable fetch command, it is to teach him how to respond and learn from pressure.
If you keep that in mind as you go through the process it will help to make sure that he truly knows how to turn off pressure.
