I have several pals I’ll let use my older dogs on a hunt or guide trip if they need them. When my old roommate and I were in our early twenties we had a couple of mutts. We trained them together and if one of us had to work and couldn’t go hunting we’d always take both dogs and never thought anything about it. I’d trust him with anything I have. I’ve met a couple of other guys I’ll loan dogs to in the last five years. I have two pals I’d let keep all my mutts all season if something happened to me where I couldn’t hunt, and be glad they were working them.i also know some guys I wouldn’t trust to feed my wife’s cat over the weekend.
How bout y’all?

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Maybe, I’ve had the opportunity to have loaner dogs before. I didn’t ask to borrow them, but the owner had a lot of dogs, and couldn’t hunt them all in one trip. I was nervous though while traveling and hunting them. It was before GPS collars.

I let my Dash travel to Montana without me once. It was someone I knew I could trust because they had taken my dog in once before when he was a puppy because I was circling the drain with necrotizing fasciitis and unable to take care of him during that time. My dog was hunted on public and private upland game every day for a Month with several other dogs. A month of constant hunting experience on wild birds is some of the best training a dog can get. But that is probably the only person I would ever lend my dog to. A forum member did once offer one of his dogs to me on loan when mine was down. I did not accept, but considered it an honor that it was offered.

I’m a little surprised to learn almost no one will loan a dog to a friend if they needed one for some reason. I also find it interesting that some of the same guys will trust a dog trainer to keep their animal for months at a time. I trust every friend I have more than any pro dog trainer I ever met. I believe Sophia Vergara would take better care of me and my mutt than several pros I know.

It's not that I wouldn't loan one to a friend I trust, it's that I don't have any friends that I trust anymore. I have been friends with people that I would have loaned them almost anything, but those people have since stabbed me in the back, moved on or just have shown me that they can't be trusted. I don't like it but it is what it is.

Not in the slightest. However years ago I did borrow my brother's brit. It was horrible. I thought I lost him. That's the last time I ever asked to borrow his dogs.

I don't like it but it is what it is. Good friends are harder to come by than good dogs. I’ve been fortunate enough to have one good friend to count on for 40+ years. I never have had many friends because I don’t need any. But I’ve met some great guys through bird hunting. I have a lot of buddies, most of them are customers, and I wonder if we’d be that close if I weren’t making a living off them. I only have 3 friends I’d loan a dog to and those guys could be trusted with anything I have because they’re men whose word means something. A rancher and I had a discussion last year about why he gave the deer hunters on our place so much sht and all of us Quail hunters got along fine with him. He’s a dog man and told me any arsehole can be a deer hunter, but it takes someone special to be a dog man and put in the dedication to be a quail hunter.

No. I have some good friends I trust, but not to hunt my bird dog.

May be on the extremes of the topic but not would I loan my dogs out and I get pretty near snippy when someone tries to handle my dogs in the field. You don't do that with another mans dog.

I once surveyed , for an aquaintance, two dogs from a hunting camp in Mexico that was closing due to cartel activity. Both dogs were hunted on foot and were suburb dogs tho they did hunt fairly close for pointers. The guy bought the dogs and I told him to only allow one person to handle the dogs. He ignored my advice and handed anyone who wanted to hunt with the dogs an astro controller and let them hunt the dogs unsupervised. By mid season one dog was working out of slight and often out of gps range, the other would not leave the hunter's side.
