What part of 22 inches did you not understand? MPBR doesn’t work in that situation.

what does any of this mumbo jumbo have to do with certain cartridges losing popularity?
None of this has anything remotely to do with cartridges that were once popular but now are not.
I'll go with another cartridge that everyone always talks about but I never see in the field....the .257 Roberts. Its been written about for ages but I have only known one person ( and that was an acquaintance at best) who owned one. but its been written about in gun magazines for decades upon decades.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Another one of those make you smile posts. This one is easy to read between the lines. I'm not down talking anybody's shooting ability here and its likely the most precise longrange marksmen reside in the dialing camp. I also have a good idea which group has the most experienced big game hunters, with the trophies to back it. It always seems to turn into a pissing contest....rather than understanding both disciplines take different skill sets and the best rifles and most sensible shooting styles for the task are not the same....
50 minutes ago, I made three shots, using the pipe and cable fence as a support, seated, kneeling, standing. 400 yards, no dialing, holding elevation and wind. Many of us have stated it before, but evidently it needs repeating. We hold for shots, too. I'm sure you have the ability and shoot enough to do it quickly. I love to shoot and in the off season I play around with longrange stuff because it makes me better and it's a hell of a lot of fun. I usually choose different rifles for most big game applications. Just different tools that suit me for what I'm doing a little better. I guess to me it's not an either or where one group is right and the other is wrong, where a lot of these discussions end up. That’s correct. There is no right or wrong without context and knowing what the desired objective is. I always point out that beyond 400 dialing for precision is a must for consistent success to be achieved. Yet many of the “shooters” either don’t understand the use of MPBR in the field or simply refuse to acknowledge it exists. I constantly hear stories from outfitters, guides, hunters, and landowners of the increasing number of folks who come hunting that only know dialing, and insist of dialing at any distance over 100 yards - wasting time and sometimes missing out on shot opportunities because of it. These are the same type people calling others “idiots”, “numbskulls”, etc. if you don’t do it their way. They simply don’t know what they don’t know. Lol makes me wonder how they think any game was taken prior to the invention of dialing scopes. Been explained no less that ten times to the troll.

Ok back on topic. After reading 11 pages I got sucked in. I'm going 260. The Creedmore is the final nail in the 260 coffin.

By the time I got here this topic was derailed. I’m afraid you may be right. Everyone I know that had one has either sold it or parked it in favor of the x47 or Creedmoor.

My problem with people using the MPBR theory of +/- 3” is the assumption that your shot is perfect to start with. If your aim is 2” off at 300 yards then you just shot 5” low. In most hunting situations 2” off at 300 yards would be considered good shooting. Using MPBR you just wounded an animal. Also 400 yards never comes into play, the fastest flattest shooting of them will get you to 310 yards or so. That still assuming your shot is perfect. So you can't be off the same 2" if you're using a mil/moa reticle? If you dial at 300 and you’re off 2” then you’re off 2”. If you’re using Maximum Point Blank Range theory you’re already 3” low at 300. Being off 2” low from your shot will (potentially) put you out of the vitals. I can stack em pretty good from a bench but in a hunting scenario being off 2” is pretty common for me. I’ll take that 310 bet if you pay for Jason’s Steel when I put holes it them. To much stuff has been killed using a form of MPBR (<400) to argue its lack of effectiveness. As long as you map your loads no reason you cant be effective with MPBR with in reasonable distance for cartridge and with in reasonable Wind allowance. They guy using it aren’t going to take a poke over 400 so any long range reference isn’t relevant. Even a Javi has significant kill zone size for a Centerfire rifle cartridge Back to topic 260 is dead from affluent commercial chambering, but bass will be around forever

BoBo it wasn’t meant to be a bet. General acceptable accuracy is +/- 3”. At least that’s the number I’ve always heard associated with MPBR. Given that 3” I don’t think there is a caliber out there that can hold in that +/- at 400 yards.
How about 343 yards for the 300 Wby.

Apparently it was the nail in the coffin to the then popular 250-3000 Savage. I've been reading about the .257 Roberts for 20 years but have only seen 1 in the field. and that was in the early 2000's, chambered in a Ruger M77

Back to topic 260 is dead from affluent commercial chambering, but bass will be around forever The case head can read .243 Win, 7mm-08 Rem, or .308 Win, and become .260 Rem with one sizing in the press. So the guy that still has a .260 Rem and is a hand loader, or knows one, ain't ever broke down.

I saw a new model 7 the other day in .260 Remington....beautiful rifle. 18" barrel, wood stock, great looking gun. first one I had seen chambered in that round in a long time.
Buddy of mine had a stainless synthetic chambered in a .260 Remington. He loved it and shot all kinds of game with it. he used I believe the 120 grain bronze tip if memory serves correctly.

it seems that Remington does a great job at marketing their rifles and a horrible job at marketing their cartridges.

Yep. I fully believe the 30 AR would be popular if Remington would support it.

How about 343 yards for the 300 Wby. MPBR really changes depending on author, animal, app etc I’ve seen from 3-5” There is but take 30” barrel I can get to 410 with roughly 4” , That bullet gets eaten by wind badly though, and pretty anemic energy wise over 300. Fun to varmint hunt with My current load w/250 zero touches 4” drop at 320 I know it wasn’t a bet i just want to poke holes in someone’s else’s steel

Agreed Easy give the 223 a little love, 25/06 is still holding on well. Unfortunately I think that’s about only two strong ones left well still got the random 300 RUM’s and a random 280’s

That was likely a older gun. Remington did 18.5" barrels on the original Model Sevens and then switched to a 20" many years ago on standard calibers. The Stainless debuted with a 20" I believe. Some even had 22" barrels.
