I have to agree with everything you said! I grew up with the old school style of hunting, where it was a sport, and not a pick and choose for those who have the cash. Hunting should be just that. "Hunting" and not looking at a ranch like it's a super store where you go and buy your trophy.
Many will argue that hunting is greater than ever. Yeah, and they are the one's who never knew what it was like to hunt just for the pleasure of hunting, and not for the kill, or the horns.
That's the problem you can't "get it" when you've never experienced it! Sad!

I must agree with your statment but I also just absorbed the fact that we are all hunters and the way in which someone takes their game is not as important as the overall fact that thay/we are all hunting and keep the rights to do so.
I wish you would all go to the discusion page at deertexas.com and look at the fights i just had with a few on the same subject there are some great views in that posting but of course all of them are wrong but mine hahahahahahahahahah

No I ain't going over to that other site, but I do agree with you and Jimbo. My reason for not liking the TTHA, numbers about 4 million, which is the size of the deer herd in Texas. If they really want to do something to improve the herd in Texas, work with TP&W to get the bag limits raised and offer incentives for people to shoot does. Stop letting people bring deer in from out of state to improve captive groups of deer. All those great new genetics are not going to help the free ranging herd one bit, and anyone that thinks so is F.O.S. Those ranchers/breeders are not going to let those genetics get off their property.
When TTHA and TP&W start working to develope more opportunities for hunters to go out and shoot does and culls, then in my opinion will they have done some thing.
TP&W thru their research down at the Kerr WMA, has proved that Texas deer have the genetics to produce exceptional bucks, but in most cases the range is over crowded with too many deer.
Do I go to the hunters extravaganza, you bet. To drink beer, look at the toys, talk to folks about hunting caribou or exotics, BUT NOT ONE DAMN THING ABOUT WHITETAILS. I also go to the Dallas safari Club show for the same reasons.
As others have said, to many of the younger folks on here do not remember what it was like, to just be able to see a deer, let alone shoot one. JMO

HORSE YOU ARE CRAZY I'll give ya that ahahahahahahahha the store bought genetics do help our free rangers but only in ever so slim ways there is always gonna be the escapee or three in the area of game ranches and some lucky hunters get to shoot a true trophy without the cost.I have friend that shot a deer in MUllins a few years back with 28 points on it the fact was it was an escapee they were hunting on 267 ac next to a high fence outfit and then a nother one of them shot his best buck ever in the 160's with 13 points on it /...... so there is a few instances where they help but very few
oh the 13 point was off spring of the other escapees'

when I purchased one of their magz. that is all I saw in it, there for when I see a TTHA sticker. I always look for a stock trailer pulling supperbuck... that may not be what the TTHA is about it just seems that way in thier publications

I've read everyones response on this post and haven't heard of anyone commenting on the TV show. I think it's the best hunting show on the tube. They had a real tear jerker on last night about a war hero that had lost both his legs and right hand. They've had 3 or 4 shows that have really gotten to me. Guess I'm getting soft in my old age. uhuhuhuh I mean middle age. Don't know much about the magazine cause it's like buying a Playboy to me. I get too excited looking at those big racks.

The TV show is a good one...I enjoy watching it. Sometimes you catch one that is right out of the magazine.

I know most of these responses have been on the slate for some time and I apologize for the late entry. Believe me, as a land owner I can testify that you don't have to have high fences to achieve a mature 130-140-150 class buck. But what you do have to have is management. Now on a "new" deer lease, its hard to pass up a 130 class 2 1/2 old. I agree with a lot of you guys in the respect if you pay your money for a lease then you can shoot what you please within the regulations of your license. But when you do shoot that young deer you are hurting yours and everybodies chance of ever seeing that buck and or his offsprings. We all know the deer are of a smaller nature in and around LLano. I was on season lease there at Marble Falls for 25 years. Yes when I was young and dumb for many years I shot the "wrong" buck. Consequently so did everybody else!Guess what happened? Our deer population got a lot smaller and inferior. Then in the last six or seven years we started managing our deer. We started feeding year round and protein. Built pens around the feeders. In that length of time we had several 140-145 class bucks on the lease. Took many pictures instead of shooting on opening week-end. It will work but it takes time. The owner could not believe his eyes when he saw the pics. If you want to package hunt or lease a place and you want quality instead of quanity dig deep cause its gonna cost one way or the other. A parting note: On my place we harvested two 150 class bucks last Nov. and several 130 and 140 class bucks. The biggest went for a lot less than you would imagine. Good hunting

That stupid skull sticker is enough to turn many folks against the TTHA. Every time I see one, I think of how stupid it looks. Has anyone stopped to think what image that sends out to all the non hunters? We all pretty much agree that it's a little unethical to parade around showing off a dead deer to non-hunters, but everyone seems to think it's fine to display stickers of a deer skull on the back glass of your truck window. At what point did that become cool?

WHY IS IT OK FOR TTHA FOLKS TO TELL THOSE WHO DO NOT SUSCRIBE TO THEIR THEORIES THAT THEY ARE WRONG BUT NOT OK FOR NON TTHA FOLKS TO TALK ABOUT THEM. THE BOTTOM LINE IS YOU BOTH CAN DO WHAT EVER THE LAW ALLOWS.
ITS ACTUALLY A MATTER OF THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS. THOSE WHO HAVE THE MONEY OR FRIENDS THAT ALLOWS THEM TO HUNT ONLY TROPHY DEER BECAUSE THEY CAN. THOSE WHO ONLY HAVE THE MONEY OR FRIENDS TO HUNT ON COMMON LEASES OR PUBILC LAND SHOOT WHAT THEY CAN WHEN THEY CAN.
IF THE THE ONES WITH THE MEANS TO HUNT BIGENS WOKE UP BROKE ONE MORNING AND THE ONES WHO DONT WON THE LOTTERY YOU BOTH WOULD CHANGE YOUR SCREEN NAME ON THF SO YOU COULD CHANGE YOU ARGUMENT. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF AND YOU WILL AGREE WITH WHAT I SAY.
IT'S JUST LIKE SNOOP DOG SAYS IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY

After being a member for 10 years or more I have mixed fealings about the mag. I get tired of hear about some rich guy who shot this big buck. Who cares!!! I want to hear more about what ranches do what to get big bucks. As far as high fences. Well its hunting ! I just feel bad for the guy's ranch who gets fenced of and they run all the deer of his place on to theirs . They are free ranging wild deer!!! I think high fence should not be put on highways. Ever seen a deer cross a road and run in to a high fence. Not cool at all.

I am not one to bash people that hunt. But I think the TTHA tends to hurt hunting more than it helps by promoting trophy deer hunting. Trophy deer hunting is exepensive. The more land owners that buy in to trophy manangement will no doubt limit the amount of people that can afford to hunt. They are pricing hunting out of the range of the middle class man, making it too expensive to hunt. You hear about it every year. Less and less deer hunters. People just can't afford it any more. Sad but true. Luckily we own our own land, but most do not. Trophy hunting is not about the enjoyment of the hunt or family experiences. Its about money.

My self I don't give a rats arse if they don't like the skull. They can look the other way, I don't like people that publicly display there rainbow colors displaying there GAY, I just look the other way. No way everyone is ever going to agree on the issue of Big Bucks for big bucks behind a fence or big bucks for any deer low fence, shoot 5 yeard old or shoot a 2 1/2 year old. To each his own, I am not politically correct and won't try to be. I drove back from Kansas in 18 degree weather there and low 30's here with the Buck pictured below in the back of my truck. In the middle of no where in Oklahoma I stopped at a small Mom and Pop store and some old fart craweld all over my butt for not covering it up. I ought a be ashamed he said, displaying that thing where women and kids could see it. Tough, look the other way. I didn't feel good, was getting over a flu bug while hunting,I had 2 choices on that deer, head up out of the bed (it was huge) or Butt up. I chose head up. I also have carpel tunnel so severe that it is difficuly for me to cape one out when it's warm, much less at 18 degrees. I got to Dallas on 635 during rush hour, thought I would reall catch H.E. double L there. A Lady and her children where pulling up next to me in the HOV lane in a Lincoln SUV dressed to the 9, She slows down and rolls down her window and I thought " Here we go, butt chewing time again" No sir, she stayed right beside me holding up traffic wanting to know everything about where when how. Go figure the old redneck did, the High Society Lady didn't. I know some are going to rip me a new one for it, go ahead I have tough skin. I normally don't, they are nice and 1/4rd up and in the coolers, if not and it's cold and I decide to let the proccessor do it, I make sure they are tucked away. But like in this case when I was hurting and tired and didn't and couldn't get all of it tucked down, get over it. I didn't break any Laws and am sick and tired of trying to keep from hurting anyones feelings. I hunt Deer, I wear camo, and I don't try to hide it from the politically correct world we live in today. Get people to quit knocking REDNECKS and I'll quit acting like one. Ha Ha, had to throw that in. OK, beat me up.

Since I am a "meat hunter" here in Missouri, I would much rather see that magazine (TEXAS MEAT HUNTERS) than the other. Yah, if I see a mature buck I would harvest it. But if that buck has a nice size doe with it- THAT DOE IS IN MY FREEZER!

The only knock I have is that I do not like seeing young kids say 12 an under, could be a little older to younger, but I do not like seeing them with Monster bucks. Sure, dad may have paid for it for them to shoot it, but it is hunting, just in a better area. My beef is that what will the kid expect next....he has not seen small deer, had to pass up deer, learned to hunt...just gone out and shot a big one, cause daddy wanted him to, but daddy was able to make it happen. No problem with how a man spends his money.
However, I think you can create a monster in kids, jealous, selfish and greedy by giving them too much success early on. I have seen it, I live it and my stepson has only two bucks on the wall and neither is over 130. He thinks every time I go to S. Texas he gets to go..Wrong, did not go last year and all I heard was there are kids younger then me who get to shoot big deer, why don't you let me? I reminded him who put him on his turkey, his 24lb striper, all his ducks, geese, pheasant, dove, hogs and all three deer he has shot? Not to mention the one javalina I let him shoot..would not let him shoot any more. Me, not dad.....and it is thru the grace of my relatioships with landowning friends that he got to go. He has already started clammering about going this year. I told him again, this is not your year. You focus on college, build your own relationships, create hunting opportunities, work around the places I take you and then you might get rewarded, but yet he still expects it. OH and is mad if another kid goes and he does not get to go. I have had a real rough time explaning to him, he did not have anybody else on youth weekend, he is too old now and he should be happy that I take the 15 year old son of a friend.....and understand why I take nobody else.
I do belong to TTHA...like it, do not blame them for raising the price of deer hunting. I blame the guy who pays the big bucks for the hunt and do not fault the landowner for getting it. I just do not like what it might teach young kids and have them say, oh, I am not shooting that spike, I want a bigger one. Well, you do not get a big one every year. That and I take my TTHA during hunting season and do not let my stepson see it...he can buy his own, but if he looks at mine, all I hear about is so and so kid, who got a big buck....guided, outfitter, etc....and how he thinks he deserves it. Not to mention the lamest of excuses...."I thought you would want me to have a good deer hunt and hunting season for my senior year!" My response, "boy, you have done more then a lot of kids your age, have more to show for it, and I did not shoot a deer my senior year of high school or my first two years of college. I went many years before I had one or two deer on the wall. get over it!"
Now I am a sorry $#@%#@$%$#@%#^$#%^$#^%#^%#@&**$ for not taking him often enough in his mind. I could care less, he has to earn it, learn from it, not be selfish, jealous and greedy...and if I hear are you going to let so and so shoot a bigger deer then I shot...one more time....then I will make darn sure he does! The explanation of you never know what will pop out, I hope he gets a big one, but he may not...that is why it is called hunting.

Hey everyone, been gone a while but it's about that time of year again, and low and behold here on the THF the first thread I read is one I can ruffle a feather or two about...
TTHA, man I really dislike it. One of the guys I hunt with got me a membership to it. The mag itself is nothing more the a "How to farm deer" ad as far as I ma concerned, then some really silly stories that strike me as a blind case of the obvious, and what blows my mind is you will have a full page ad of some monstor bucks for sale, then on the next page you will have some jr. high level story about deer and nutrition that basically says "deer can't live on corn alone" and it's like DUH, ya think so. It seems so silly to me, it seems so not hunting more like farming with guns and then they call it a trophy, it just does not sit right with me at all, but that shouldent suprise the half of you that think i am a nutcase anyway.
Glad to see everyone still around and ranting as always, looking forward to another great season, some of you fells in Houston do a rain dance and send that rain to the hill country for me if ya could.
Brian
