Is the old Butter Field? stage coach stop still there? Beautiful place and great pictures. I was up there before it became a NP. We got off the trails and tired short cuts to come down the numerous canyons. They turned into dead end with a 200+ foot vertical drop. All the canyons were wet and full of vegetation and tall Pines.

It's a National Park. National Park = limited facilities. You need a permit for the primitive, higher campground.

there’s an internet group called peak baggers that hit the highest peaks in every state.

In the last 4 years I've caught three from that group on the big ranch, they want to climb Signal Peak on the north end of the ranch.

Just before that bridge is a drop-off that will make you heart jump.

There were several drops that made me sick. The worst for me was rounding the corner to the right immediately before the peak. One of our group never got past it. I told it he was only five minutes away, he looked at me and threw up.

I remember that, too. It gets a little sketchy, up there, but not too bad.

I kinda like sketchy - sketchy food, sketchy women, sketchy drinks etc. This was at +/- 18,700 feet sitting on the edge of a volcano (dormant) crater rim with a 3000 foot face/drop on my left that we just finished climbing and the crater to my right:

It varies a lot, depending on the pace you set. They say to allow 6-8, round trip. We did it right at 4, with no water. We made a challenge out of it, allowing for a couple breaks to enjoy the sights. My conditioning isn’t great, but I can push pretty hard at a slow but steady pace. If I were in better shape, 3 hours wouldn’t be difficult, without stopping to enjoy the views. I’ll be going back, and I’ll whittle away at my time as my conditioning improves. I also plan on increasing the challenge, like doing it twice in a day, or with a weighted pack.

For someone in decent shape, that isn’t out to set any goals, I’d say 6 hours, minimum. Start early in the morning, too, when the weather is warm. That’ll make a big difference. We saw some rather portly people going up, midday, as we were coming down. I suspect they didn’t see the top, that day.

You need to hike McKittrick Canyon in the fall when the leaves are turning colors. There isn't the altitude change, more of a flatlanders hike.

I had planned on hitting other trails up there. I’ll be sure and schedule that one for the fall.

Man I would love to do that. It's been on the list for some time. Can a woman handle it ok? I'm sure it all depends on fitness level again. The wife would be with me and she's 9 years younger and in a lot better shape, lol. She prolly wouldn't be as happy as me doing it, though, lol. Thanks for the reply!

Oh yeah. I saw men and women of all ages, even people I’d say were in their 70’s, making it to the top. You could tell they were active people, and they paced themselves.
