All that being said, it's not my favorite long range round. It's definitely not my favorite hunting round. But if I had the budget or inclination to own one rifle to do everything, it would be a 6.5 Creedmoor.
Are people really considering the 6.5 creedmoor to be a do-everything caliber? for my way of thinking, if you had only 1 rifle for all hoofed North American Big Game, that caliber range would start at the 7mm Remington mag and run thru the .338's. No way would I want to hunt Moose, Elk or Mountain Goat with a 6.5 creedmoor. By do-everything, they're talking about it being the best at hunting, target shooting, PRS-style shooting, etc. Sure, a 7RM will take an elk, but you'd get your arse kicked in PRS with it, and probably wouldn't fare well in any type of normal target shooting because it's punishing to shoot any reasonable number of rounds with. You can buy a 6.5 CM and use that for regular target shooting, long range shooting, PRS, and hunting, and not only is it not poorly suited for any of those, but you don't even have to load your own ammo to do it. It's basically a 270 for hunting and a 308 for long range, with less recoil than both and really good factory ammo for both purposes. Identical to those? No, but close enough that most folks wouldn't ever notice a difference. The 6.5 isn't falling or going anywhere for a long, long time. The 270, 25-06, 30-30, etc. will be gone once the over-40 crowd has stopped hunting. Almost nobody under 40 shoots those calibers at all, or ever will. I feel like the 30-06 has a different following that may hold on a bit longer, but it'll eventually fall by the wayside too. The 6.5 may fall by the wayside too, but it would take something truly revolutionary to replace it. It's such an obscenely well-designed and well-supported cartridge that to improve upon it to the point that people are willing to adopt a new cartridge, it's gonna have to be way better. 30-06, 30-30, and 308 are about all I shoot... and I’m just over half of your listed age.... Goes for most of my buddies too.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

I feel like a whole lot of yall just sit there after work drinking beer and posting stuff on the forum all night.
In my mind I could imagine JG and a dozen others spraying beer out of their noses and spinning and jumping up and down like the taxmanian devil, when I posted that about Creedmoor and tikka.

WHEWW!! Ok, I just read this from start to finish. Bottom line: Shoot whatever you want. I will keep my .243 because that is the gun my son shot his first deer with. My.270 I will keep because I took my first Texas whitetail with it. And the .300 wby mag I just purchased I will enjoy and pass down. I don't believe the .270's and .243's will be going anywhere anytime soon. When my generation stops hunting, the kids and grandkids will get them and hopefully think of me when using them to take an animal... It is very entertaining to say the least. I don't see anyone changing their minds based upon this thread though...

The .243 likely isn't going anywhere because it's the first well-known cartridge above the .224s. It has stood the test and dismissed dang near all comers. While the 6 CM is picking up steam, I'll bet the .243 still outsells it in new guns.
I'd bet that in Texas, between 1960 and 2000, the .270 Win was in the top 3-5 most sold cartridges as far as 'deer rifles' go. Before the 6.5s recently got hot, it was THE cartridge between the .243 and the .30s. Hard-hitting, flat-shooting, less recoil than the '06, and popularized by several well-known authors.
The .308 and the .30-06 aren't going anywhere. The .308 will live on because it's a NATO cartridge, available in every platform, and is so capable at many things. The .30-06 has long been known as the one cartridge that is effective on anything in North America, from varmint to moose/bear. 110-220gr availability, over-the-counter even in some really obscure places. If you didn't buy a .270 you likely bought a .30-06 and many of them have been handed down or bought either for kids/grandkids, or by kids/grandkids who saw dad using it.
So what does that get us to? .25-06, never really all that loved because it kicked like a .270 but wasn't? 7RM, lots of bang but on both ends, nobody wants/needs a belt anymore? Any/all of the ailing Ruger cartridges or are those already pretty much dead?

Any/all of the ailing Ruger cartridges or are those already pretty much dead? The RCM's were dead right from the start. Ruger was the last one to the table in terms of short mags and by the time they were released the short mag craze was not new anymore. Sad because there was a lot of bang in those little rounds.

I think the .338 and .375 RCM enjoy some popularity in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. When I think of a complete crash and burn I think of the .30 TC....but again, without that one, we wouldn't have the beloved 6.5 creedmoor…..
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

One of the 3 you listed I didn't discuss at all because it isn't going anywhere (308). 30-06 is not going anywhere soon, which I said. 30-30 is a specialized short-range round that has very limited usage. So we agree on 2 of the 3. You must be in your early 20s though - how many of those 30-30 rifles did you guys buy versus something you inherited from the over-40 crowd?

This forum is very range/competition/shooting centric. The vast majority of people are not range/competition nuts. At all. For most the range is simply a place folks go to check zero/shoot a little prior to hunting season and competitive rifle shooting is not something 98% of people take part in. LR and competition shooting are the “specialized purposes”. Shooting a rifle at 1200 yards is the “specialized purpose”. Most don’t do that or have any interest in doing it. A LR rig to shoot at 1000 yards plus is a helluva lot more “specialized” than a .30-30 for the vast majority of people. I carry a levergun constantly on my place and it’s a heckuva a lot more practical and useful than any sniper rifle ever would be. Hunting at ranges of 400 and under is how the vast majority of rifle owners use their rifles. There are dozens and dozens of cartridges that work just fine for that. Basically anything from .24 caliber thru .33 caliber that will push a bullet in the mid-2000 fps on up. And as the max range decreases the number of caliber choices increase.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I can put 5 rounds on a quarter at 200 yards with any of these. you keep punching paper. You say that like it is a bad thing. I had to go back and look to see if I posted on this yesterday. We may have had a few after coming off the lake. I remembered posting. I might not have remembered exactly what all I said. I see that I got a gerbil involved in the conversation. Poor little fella. Not gonna lie... I have done it too. Sometimes I go back and think hmm i dont remmeber saying that yesterday. But this time I was sober as a bell

I love my 25-06 and my 358 Win. I think the CM is good I’m not interested int it. I also love 300 weatherby but I’ve been thinking about a 7mag. Got to love options.

You are not that important to me. Yeah sure, but creedmoor and tikka probably are... Up until something better for the same price, or less, comes along. Ruger is almost there with their new 3 lug action. Almost, but it just isn't as smooth, and the trigger isn't as good. Ruger does good work, period. And they are a U.S. company. But, they are out performed right now. Maybe they wil make some tweaks. As far as cartridge improvements over the 6.5 Creedmoor, it is some large boots to fill. To do the same, or better, and support it with plenty of high quality ammo.

They don't shoot competitions, might hunt once a year or might not, and don't buy guns that are only good at range shooting, or only good at hunting. They buy stuff that can do both, which is why the 6.5 is such a popular cartridge. As for rifle sales, the competition shooters buy way, way more stuff than the hunters. I have a 30-30 that's literally never been out of the safe except to check function. My point - we are not all the same, and not everyone is like you.

Ruger's "New" 3 lug action? I just got home from the range about two hours ago. I shot a 20 inch Bravo Company AR, a Kleinguenther K14 .243, and a recently acquired Ruger American .30-06. The Ruger's 3 lug bolt looks almost exactly like the 3 lug bolt on the Kleinguenther that was manufactured in 1974. Just like cartridges, the more things change the more they stay the same. Holler at ya'll later, I have three rifles to clean . Just my .02, LeonCarr

I don't believe the .270's and .243's will be going anywhere anytime soon. When my generation stops hunting, the kids and grandkids will get them and hopefully think of me when using them to take an animal... It is very entertaining to say the least. I don't see anyone changing their minds based upon this thread though... Notice that you only keep those calibers for sentimental reasons. If you choose calibers based on ballistics, recoil, performance in competition, and performance in hunting, there are really only a few to pick from that make much sense at all for anything other than specialized purposes. So it is your position that outside of sentimental reasons these calibers are of no use? WOW, what an incredibly ignorant statement. I can put 5 rounds on a quarter at 200 yards with any of these. you keep punching paper. I am sure it fills the manhood void you otherwise have in your life when you put 3 into a half inch against a paper target with your specialized caliber. Nowhere did I say that at all. I said that the person who posted the original comment said that the reason they had those rifles was because they had sentimental value, not because they're better tools for the job. Reading comprehension - try to think about what someone's saying before you call them ignorant please. Reading comprehension? I made the original comment. Good one. Keep punching that paper with your special round. Until that next special round comes along. Next?

If you choose calibers based on ballistics, recoil, performance in competition, and performance in hunting, there are really only a few to pick from that make much sense at all for anything other than specialized purposes. The vast majority of people I know with guns are not hunters, but guys who go to the range to have a good time. That post proves my point about the shooter vs. hunter mentality. If you really think the majority of gun/ammo sales are by competition shooters instead of hunters, I don’t know what to tell you except that you are badly mistaken. There are over 1,500,000 hunting licenses sold in Texas every year. Which is why the big gun sales season for all the retail outlets is in the late summer/early fall just prior to the hunting seasons. There are a helluva lot more people that hunt than shoot competitions or just for recreation alone. In other words, a helluva lot more people like me than like you.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.
