Planning to dial or hold? Mil or MOA? FFP or SFP?

I have killed over a dozen elk in Montana and Colorado with a 270 and a $75 Tasco 3x9. lol Just sayin'.
The older I get I do appreciate good glass but you will spend much more time behind a good pair of binos compared to that few seconds behind a scope.

What say the THF?

I have an LRHS and 2 XTRIIs, and they are great scopes if you want to shoot long range and dial for elevation or hunt with them........But, If I had to do it over again on my Tikka CTR I would go with one of the above. The reasons being lighter weight and smaller package, which is much preferred for a mountain hunting rifle or spot and stalk. Your longer shot opportunities many times are not going to give you time to dial for elevation so you will hold for 5-600 yard shots which ain't that difficult with practice and a good mil dot reticle IMO. This is a steal on this scope.

Appreciate all the input. Have looked at all the scopes recommended and some I have read about on other forums.

Here’s answers to some questions:
Would like the ability to dial as well as parallax adjustment. Don’t know how far I might need to shoot in the future and don’t want to invent the wheel again if I can get in a good scope now.
FFP would be awesome, although not necessary. Not a deal breaker if SFP.
Mil preferred but again not a deal breaker if MOA.
Looking to keep weight under or around 20 oz.
Cost below 1K would be ideal, not opposed to close out models or demos. I am very interested in the vx5 by Leupold, but also considering other options.
I have lots of time, so that’s on my side, can wait for a good deal or demo to show up.

Thanks again and keep the inputs coming!

I have had no issues at long range with my 25 to 30 year old 3x9x 50 Leupolds. Don't know if there have been any changes to them. About 27 or 28 years ago was on a cow elk hunt on a New Mexico Indian reservation. A herd was spotted on a mountain across from us. No idea about distance but another hunter had a range finder that went to 700 yards and he said they were further than that. I held 4 ft over the back of a cow and it hit at it's feet. I held another 5 ft or so higher and killed it. It was a damn lucky shot on my part but the real point is that I had a really good sight picture.

Never should have taken that shot.

This is a discontinued model. They currently sell the LTHS scope, but not the LRHS. Having said that, the LT mode is interesting, might have to make a trip to my local Cabela’s and see if they have this and the vx5 in stock.

Chad, Agree on whether to take it. But, in those days I was into long range shooting and taken an antelope at about 450 yards a month before. The Indian guide said shoot and I did. These days, at 76, I not only can't shoot like that I have to shoot 3 or 4 times a week to keep my flinch at bay. I also have to shoot off a rest.

Does anyone have any personal experience with the forge line from bushmell? Is this a step down from the revered lrhs or a lateral move? I know it’s a little heavy at 28oz but locking wind/elevation and FFP in Mil (or MOA if you prefer) for around 850 isn’t bad....question is how is the glass? The lrts line is around 1300 everywhere I look and seems no one wants to give up their lrhs scopes bang

Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x50 - RZ600 can be had for $700. I bought one on sale at Cabela's a year ago for under $600. I use it exclusively for elk hunting and it's an awesome scope. I still need to play around with some of the feautures on it.

Based on what I see on this blog, you need to spend upwards of $1000 on ANY scope you choose. After all, the cheapies (under $200 scopes) that have worked for many years and contributed to the death of thousands of elk, just will not cut it any more...
