Might as well add "People in east Texas are different " to the list that includes HF vs. LF, .223 as a deer caliber, etc.
I've known some of the best people and some real scum "behind the Pine Curtain ". I'm talking about true Deep East Texas (San Augustine/Nacogdoches, etc.). Whoa...don’t be lumping us in with San Augustine Co...that’s The Louisiana buffer. I think the story of Gigi from Broaddus would qualify as a Wild East Texas Experience.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

East Texas folks are a bit different. Some things for the better some for the worse.
If you moved to Texas from out of state to the Plano area, yes yes East Texas is full of crazy chainsaw massacre like Sasquatch looking for out of towners. I'd also recommend and prefer you stayed in Collin county. No offense.

I live in the Tyler area and hunt near Jefferson te texas. Never really had any problems. I had way more issues with theft and poaching when I hunted west of Fort Worth in Eastland county.

Hunted Cass county one year, saw good deer but also poachers. One guy was wearing a buckskin jacket with the fringe, like Daniel Boone. Walked up on him before he saw us. My Son was young. We quietly backed out of there. Weirdest though was when I got invited to hunt near Caddo lake in Harrison cty. My friend had a lease near a big cat rehab facility. Tigers roaring right before dark will make the hair on the back of your neck stand straight out

Been living behind the Pine Curtain for 45 years. Lots of good folks, and some bad. Just like anywhere you should be as good to people as they allow, but never let your guard down. Been real fortunate to have taken several nice bucks, but being retired allows me to spend lots of time in the woods. There's a lease next to my place with several boys from the DFW area hunting on it. They complain about no deer being around. Of course I know when they're here, they ride around on the SxS with radios blasting, and shoot at every critter that moves. When I hear that I know its time to get in the stand, because the deer will be coming my way...

Try the whole state of Alabama. Poaching here is considered an Olympic sport. Bonus points are awarded for the value of stolen stuff.

Its even worse when its -65 degrees with snow. They would prefer you don't go hunt up there as well.

I lived in east Tx for 6 years. I never did care for it. I always felt boxed in with all of the Pine trees. I quit deer hunting and took up duck and squirrel hunting. Glad to be out west again. One good thing about east Texas is shoes and bras are optional anywhere, especially Walmart. Pajamas are also considered business casual once you get east of Tyler.

We may be ragging on east Texas, but I can assure you, carp happens all over the state. Just that in those deep woods you can hide. Out west you're much more likely to be spotted. Towns are closer too in east Texas. More meth labs per capita.

The only thing I miss about east Tx is living on lake Palestine. The lakes out there are unbelievable. I’m getting geared up to Fish the TX Oilmens on Toledo Bend next month. I haven’t missed it for anything since I moved. One of my old customers and I haven’t finished below 25’th everout of the 700 boats yet. We have a big crawfish boil and he likes to mix a “Short Drink,” before the sun comes up to get things going our way on opening morning of the TOBI.

Scalebuster, you're right. I grew up fishing east Texas lakes. Toledo bend, Sam Rayburn, Palestine, Koon Kreek, and Cedar creek. Best bass fishing in the state, if not the United states.

When I was 12 years old my Dad, brother a neighborhood friend and myself spent 6 days fishing Toledo bend, when it was fairly new. This was probably 1972. We caught hundreds, no kidding, of 'barn door' crappie. H-n-H in yellow killed 'em. Tom Lepere of the Times herald had an article about us... ..Yeah.....I coulda' been a contenda!

I was on a lease in the '80s outside of Broaddus. Went up in May to move some stuff around and spent the night on a cot under a tarp. Beautiful, full moon night. I woke in the predawn to a strange sight. A weather balloon was reflecting light overhead. It was at about 1000' and very slowly descending immediately above me. I got up and made coffee and breakfast as the large balloon and instrument packaged touched down within about 300 yards in the clearcut I was on camped on. Within minutes a helicopter arrived, and with a long line and hook they snagged the package and departed towards Lufkin.

In the 90's I was placing telephone cable in DeKalb Tx, but they didn't have motels, so we stayed in New Boston. There was me and the supervisor, both Caucasian, and two African American co workers. We got up one morning, walked to our vehicles and every single car and truck there had a KKK membership drive meeting poster on the windshield. My coworkers were nervous from there on out. Spent a lot of time working in Texarkana too. But those stories can only be told around a camp fire or something, lol. That's the partying-est place I've ever seen. We'd have to leave the bar by 5 am so we would make 6 am wake up call. Good thing those days are behind me.
Mmmm Hmmm

Those were the days, during the same time we camped in Harvey's near Huxley Bay. We would run down river near Doyle English and get in one of the river bends and catch the Crappie by the boat load. No need to measure them as they were on the large size. Man I miss those days and my dad.

Huxley bay. Doyle English and Brinsons fish camp were our go to places. Fished around the "chicken coop" quite a bit. What an awesome lake. You could drop a minnow or jig around any stump and catch fish. No size limit or bag limit on crappie back then. They were mostly black crappie. Good eating. So sorry about your Dad, old Rabbit.
