Hey now wait a cotten pick’n second, how does all that work? Does it tell you who your relatives are or something?

Hey now wait a cotten pick’n second, how does all that work? Does it tell you who your relatives are or something? If you choose to make your results public, it identifies others who had their DNA tested and alerts you when your DNA is linked to others in the database. And because the match may be second or third cousins, you can send messages to these people to see how you're related to them. The kicker, as best as I can tell, is the database matches are extremely reliable. I had two people contact me and was quickly able to confirm our family relation. After this happened, I reached out to a third person (1st or 2nd cousin) but they could not confirm our family link. I didn't pursue the link further. IMO, it can definitely open a can of family worms when information between cousins can trace back to families wanting to hide secrets for good and personal reasons. I'll even go so far to say it could be another example of technology that has exceeded the limits of our courts. For example, what if a first cousin contacts me looking to identify their father or mother, who doesn't wish to be known. Could I be called to court to testify about what I know?

Apparently her alleged dad was 6'2 Hispanic guy. I would joke with her mom about it because my wife is five foot nothing. She always thought she was Hispanic and had Native American traits. I thought it was a small chance she could be Asian. Never in a million years would I think she's actually half asian, and half Hispanic. Tell me what you think. You'll know she's Chinese if you want to do it again an hour later. Got a more resent Pic?

A good buddy of mine found out that his dad wasn't his real dad.
His mom had already passed away.
His dad is older and not in great health.
He told his bother and sister but they elected not to tell his dad.
I guess it's possible his dad knows.

Because we're going to find out one way or another. He just laughed it off. It seemed like a nervous laugh though.

Don't see how it could tell you about your dad not being your dad unless he sent in one as well. Or I guess if your father is Chinese and yours doesn't come back showing that.

I believe they did get his dad's DNA. My friend's wife was putting the whole thing together. That is why they think he didn't know.

You have to specifically choose to share your personal results. Until somebody makes a mistake or somebody hacks your account or somebody steals the entire database.

Did y'all read the article that said these test were a scam and wildly inaccurate? They are lucky to be able to guess the right continent. LINKLike someone might say about a vasectomy that failed after a woman gets pregnant? I must admit that I had my own doubts until two people from different sides of my family tree contacted me through the website and we quickly determined our family link. One was a first cousin and the other a third. Even though she was a third cousin, it only took one message from me for her to identity her grandfather as first cousin to my father. Not sure if that makes she and I third or even fourth cousins. The person who turned out to be my first cousin on my mother's side of the family tracks her DNA links as a hobby. She's the wife of a former government official with who I never really speak. Needless to say, it kind of blew me away that she had her DNA tested and the match came up. My mother's family were dirt poor, but her mother married a man with money. Could be wrong but suspect that's the family she wants to learn about most. I laughed a little when I sent her a reply that I knew who she was by her email. I suspected I wasn't from the side of the family she wanted to hear from most. Very good person though.

Mine originally included some regions that did not match what I had.. The latest update is pretty close to matching what I already knew from my family tree. The 54% I suspect would be more from Northwestern Europe side if I relate it to the number of my known ancestors from that region. Which BTW also overlaps a good part of present day Ireland/Scotland. I have grandfathers that fought in just about every war in the us from the king williams war, french indian, revolutionary war, and on. Lots of other adventure seeking types too like indian fighters, lawmen, long hunter, frontier ranger, regulator, and more. It has been fascinating tracking all their life stories down.
Updates England, Wales & Northwestern Europe 54% Ireland & Scotland 33% Sweden 9% Germanic Europe 4%
The reason they don't differentiate Northwestern Europe from England & Wales is due to the Norman Conquest. It seems that in many areas the Norman DNA is as high as 75%. To complicate things further many native Britons fled across the channel to what is now Brittany.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Oddly there is a large majority of Americans that believe they are part Native American. As soon as I start talking genealogy with folks it is the first thing that comes out, this is not only an Elizabeth Warren thing.

So the wife, and I did the whole DNA thing for Christmas. I haven't got mine back yet, but my wife got hers back yesterday. Apparently the story her mom told her for years wasn't true. It was long thought that she looked asian. Not to me, but to many. Including random asian people. To me she looked hispanic/native american. If she was wrapped in a woven blanket she looked Navajo, and is she wore a Mongolian hat she look like a little Genghis Khan, so I wondered. Well yesterday, we got her results.....she's 49% Chinese from Taiwan. She's a little confused, and off-kilter today, which is understandable, but i think its pretty cool and interesting. My results will probably be pretty boring "typical hispanic" results for the area. I might be 20% Russian, was thought to be German at one point. Stories passed down for years may not be accurate. We'll see when i get my results back. Curious, any idea where the 49% chinese came from in her family? Her dad wasn't who her mom said. She only saw her alleged dad a couple of times when she was a baby. The good thing is she never had a relationship with him, because this would be really awkward. SA, according to 23andMe, a female will only receive genetic markers from her mother. She will receive traits from both, but the DNA results will only reflect her mother's, grandmother's, greatgrandmother's, etc., DNA markers. Men receive markers from both mother and father (xy chromosome thing).

Thank you. Now you have me reading about the Norman Conquest and the Norman invasion of Ireland that came after. What a complicated place and time. I need to find a good book on it all.
