You did good protecting a child; however, you mentioned your wife was there...? Had she taken the child in the house while or when the dad confronted you, the situation may have been a bit calmer. It would have taken away the opportunity for the child to be exposed to anger and or a possible volatile situation.

Just my .02 cents but glad you put a child first.

Disagree, respectfully. If you’re the Dad, there’s a huge difference in physically seeing your kid and them disappearing into someone’s house. I think that would definitely escalate that situation. All in all, based on what was presented to CC, he did an awesome job at ensuring everyone’s overall safety until LEO showed up. That sucks to be put into situations you don’t ask for like that. Good job Sir!

Well, the THFers Monday morning quarterbacked the heck out of this one. It is very easy to sit behind your keyboard and tell the OP what he should have done from the safety of your home or office. The fact is you people weren't there and have no idea how fluid and fast moving these situations are. Of course don't let lack of experience keep you from arguing your opinion. Also, just because some of you would shrink from helping the child in this situation certainly doesn't mean the OP did anything wrong.

Child came to OP and needed help. OP protected the child until law enforcement could arrive and take over. No one was hurt.

Both state and federal law mandate immediate reporting of suspected abuse. The OP did the right thing both legally and morally. Mandatory reporting applies to all individuals and is not limited to teachers or health care professionals. The law even extends to individuals whose personal communications may be otherwise privileged, such as attorneys, clergy members, and health care professionals. The fact the child asked for help was all he needed to know. From there it is up to LEO’s and/of CPS to sort it out. Hopefully the kiddo is OK and neck-tat gets a life.
