Brand and Caliber.

What would your choice be?

Budget of $2000, but would like to stay south of $1500.

You know I'm going to say 300 Weatherby.

That is a good one. The one elk I shot with one didn't argue just died

Lots of good choices though

280AI would be on my short list though if buying a new gun for them. I would just go with my 270WSM Tikka though. Elk is what I bought it for

300 Win Mag would be my choice. Something stainless/synthetic. Tikka would be high on the list.

7 Rem Mag
300 Win Mag
28 Nosler
30 Nosler

Not on a Tikka action. Their free bore, on their barrels is so long, bullets have to jump a long way to rifling. The feed ramp also causes bullets that need to sit deep in the case. A Rem 700 action, or a Bighorn action for more money. Bartlein barrel, pick your stock and bottom metal.

Does JG no longer like Tikka? Is the world flat? Global warming is true? KRoyal is a Democrat? Buzz will show up to the next hunters challenge? IDontKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer doesn’t really make doves mourn???

I may be on the lookout for a used rebarrel in a big hitter. Usually see some 300WM about this time of year

These were pretty nice at the NRA show. Not sure if the specs and twist are up to standards

Tikka short actions are still the best money spent. Not for the big mag bolt face cartridges, though. Reasons previously identified.

Not necessarily. I built my 30 Nos on a tikka specifically for my upcoming elk hunt in 2019. 215 Berger had its most accurate load (honest 1/3 moa) with a .120” jump and could still put plenty of h1000 to get me a mv of 2950.

Took it to S Africa and it did not disappoint. All one shot kills on elk sized critters at all ranges — 250 to 728 yds.

I guess my T3 300wm will go in the trash bin for Tuesday's pick up.

All three of my bulls fell to a .300 Weatherby Mark 5. I bought a Weatherby S2 since I was beating my nice one up. Too much history to leave the nice one at home. I have two now. Kind of sad killing 100 lb deer with the .300s. Heck I also have a Sendero in .300 Win Mag. Not sure why way to heavy for elk hunting.

If you want to sit the bullet even with the rifling, can you?

Geez, he's starting from scratch, why not prevent the problem. It's exhausting dealing with little girls.

And there you have it. Wish they'd do something about that feed ramp.

Get a wsm and enjoy carrying a short action in the mountains. My 300wsm has taken blue grouse up to cow bison, including moose and elk with the deer and antelope.
165-180 gr bullets will do it all. I load 165-168 gr bonded bullets and the spouse loads 180 gr bonded bullets. 25 years of harvests can't be wrong.
We shoot a Sako A7 tecomate and a Winchester featherweight both in 300wsm.
Have taken elk and moose with a 270wsm. Hit them like a freight train with only 140 gr bonded bullets.

Wytex, I went from a Remington 700 in 7mmSTW to a Tikka T3 hunter in 270 WSM for my mountain hunting rifle lost almost 2 lbs of weight. The only bullet the WSM has had fired through it is the 140gr Accubond. Never have gotten to try it on elk but have no doubt it will work. The 270 Win has been killing elk longer than most ofus have been alive no reason a faster 270 should be any different.
