Looking into doing a Canadian moose hunt.

Anyone here been? Could go either a lodge style hunt or backwoods tent set up

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Yeah I’ve hunted moose in Alaska. Was not successful. Go to Africa. You can do a plains game hunt for near the same money.

Thanks, Billy

I haven't but have a friend in Alaska who does it quite often.
He says most important is to shoot it close to the road or water (if traveling by boat).

I have taken two shiras moose in Wyoming DIY. It helps when the landowner is willing to lend a hand. They are big but not unmanageable.

I've hunted them, though not in Canada. I was hunting a bit further east - Finland. No luck on moose though it was a great hunt.

Haven’t but would love to. Have a lot of hunts on the list I’ve put ahead of it. Would love to see Alaska or the Yukon.

Go with a tent hunt. Wet, miserable, mosquitos, most work after the shot... And most memorable hunt I've been on. And best eating critter in the north country.

I'm gonna do a moose hunt some day myself. Not sure if I'll spend the $$$ to go to theYukon/AK, but Newfoundland sounds interesting.

Did an Alaska 12 day float trip for moose with longbows. Great time, killed some wolves but no moose. Alaska is a young mans trip doing it that way. Cold, wet camping and tough on the body.

Went hunting nearvFortbSaint John, British Columba, Canada. I was on a goat hunt but they were not cooperating so I decided to try for a moose instead. Got a decent one for the area. [Linked Image]

Reach out to Mark at Anchor Bar in Alberta. When I was there a couple of years ago hunting whitetail and and mule deer, I saw a ton of moose. Close enough to drive and bring everything back. It is outrageously expensive to ship meat from Canada. Oh, moose meat is damn good.

Killed a few here in Idaho and Wyoming. Take a lot of people out for their's when they draw a tag. Perfectly willing to help anyone wanting info on the process here in Idaho. Our Price is $152 for a license, and then a refundable fee of $2150 to apply. You can buy deer and elk tags over the counter and make a great combo hunt.

I lived in Northwest Ontario some ten years and hunted them. They were nearly wiped out in the area since whitetail moved in and brought Brainworm parasites which killed the moose. That was 15 years ago and they haven't really repopulate the Lake of the Woods area. I would head west into British Columbia, Alberta, or the Yukon for biggest animals. They are exceptionally tasty......and lots of meat on those animals.

I'm 2 for 2 with decent bulls on a couple trips up north of Prince George, British Columbia. Both trips were based at a main lodge, hunting was out of remote spike camps or remote cabins. You will learn to appreciate stainless/synthetic rifles (30-06 both times for me) and pack horses.

Wyoming takes PP and lots of them to draw, a random draw tag is possible though.
Anyone with near max or max PP in Wyoming I know the best area to hunt by far.
You could find FS cabin to stay in or hunt from town, Laramie.
Idaho has some great moose hunting too and sounds like easier to get a tag.
More affordable hunts in Quebec, Alberta etc.. for shiras moose.

The landowner who granted free access for my last shiras dropped him in the shade for quartering by his barn. My bulls have been fairly youngish and great eating.

Western Wy is seeing a decline in both quantity and quality due to wolves impact. I know we are down some also, but the decrease in tags is mostly in the northern area. Not too many changes in the SE portion of the state. Several good outfitters in the area and hunts are quite reasonable for a Shiraz bull. Seems like AK BC and Yukon hunts are getting really expensive.

I have not but have several friends that have. They all say how excited they are until they get next to their dead moose and realize they just shot a Surburban and had to get it out!
That said it is on my bucket list.

While living in New Hampshire tried several times near my home around Lake Winnesquam. Snow at the time of year was over 3 ft deep so snow shoes were mandatory and made hunting a chore. It was unreal assessing a Moose rub as it is usually on a tree about 6" in dia and about 5 to 6 ft above the ground. Gives you something to consider when you realize how large they are. Saw a couple but was never blessed with a shot. I'm too old now unfortunately.

I currently live in AK, and have hunted them every year for the past 25 years. Our moose camp is fly in only, so everything is packed out on your back to camp and then the airstrip to get out. They are monsters for sure to deal with, and not something you want to do by yourself if you can help it. And they tend to die in some of the worst places to try and clean and butcher one. They don't call them swamp donkey's for nothing.

Planning one for next year in Newfoundland; have a brother in law living in St. John's and has a few connections there for processing and shipping the meat!

Would not really recommend Ontario. Our numbers are in decline and it's not worth the $$$ based on the the success rates. Best bang for your buck in Canada is Newfoundland. Lots of Newfie outfitters have success rates over 90% and for 5 or 6K you will get a great a hunt with the friendliest people our country has. The only caveat is that the newfie moose are smaller than the giants out west or Yukon/Alaska. That being said the mature bulls still go over 1000 lbs. Racks in Newfoundland are smaller as well more like 45 inches compared to Yukon/Alaska where you easily get 55 to pushing 70 inches.

If you go Newfoundland choose an outfitter with remote helicopter/floatplane access hunts. This will add 1K or so to the trip price but you are more likely to get into the bigger bulls and have a higher success rate. Lots of bear and caribou in Newfoundland as well. You could probably do a combo moose/bear/caribou hunt for the price of a single guided Yukon/Alaska hunt. if you drop the caribou and just add a bear it probably only add $500 to $1000 to your hunt.

I know a few guys who have gone with these guys and have nothing but good to say about them:

Two hunts. Like Hirogen above said, first hunt was in Newfoundland with Tuckamore Lodge 12 years ago. Pay the extra $1,000 or so and go to Area 1 at the very northern top of Newfoundland. If Barbara Genge has not retired or gone out of business it will be a great hunt. Took my wife with me. She did the tourist thing, visited Vikings National Park, spa treatments, etc. guide and I hunted from a drop camp in Area 1. Yukon hunt with Jim Shockey Outfitters was great also but much more expensive and rustic but much larger bull. Wife did not go on last hunt but I had spoiled her on the first hunt so she didn't protest much.

Are all of the moose tan-colored up there? The moose I see here are usually almost solid black.

They tend to look dark and are pretty dark on the bottom up to the shoulders usually. Cows here will be much lighter, even looking blond sometime.

On another note, interesting screen name. Gusuk in Athabaskan is a slang term for white man, also spelled Gussuck in Yupik.
