Curious of the many knife makers on here how many of you make the knives from total scratch? No blanks, no send out the leather etc. You make the knife all the way. Not knocking any of you as I can see using blanks would be easier and still get a beautiful knife.

Sole authorship here. I'll have highly tooled sheath done by Dink-Dodger but the others I do myself. My knives are 100% done by me in my shop from start to finish. Nothing wrong with using blanks as long as the maker is up front about it.

I use blanks to build sheath knives, but I don't make any to sell. Not just because it's unlikely anyone would pay for my basic level of craftsmanship, but mostly because I enjoy doing it for me, and don't want to turn it into "work".

I built them from scratch for years. I worked in a blacksmith shop as a farm and ranch kid. A lot of years. Never sold them but gave the away. Then I got old but haven’t died. Kinda shaky now. About 10 years ago I discovered Russel Green River blades at Jantz Supply. Those are good high carbon steel blades that take and hold an edge.
No longer a knife maker but now a handle “putter oner”. Now a “has been” but not a “never was”.
A couple of years ago my Wife got the bright idea that I ought to “make” 10 sets of steak knives for Xmas to give to relatives and for us. No way I would have ever done that many serrated edges.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

From start to finish; no one touches any part of my knife making. The only service I use is the USPS to mail off my knives to customers.
