I am looking for a good load to try in 358 Winchester. Looking on the max load end to get the most out of the round but not lose accuracy. Mainly 200-225 grain bullet weight out of my newly rebored Savage Hog Hunter. I had Jesse at JES rebore from 308 to 358. Rifle has medium heavy barrel threaded at 20". Also if anyone has unused 358 brass they want to get rid of PM me please. Thanks, Jim

Try the Lyman reloading book, either a new one (if the data is in there) or an old one. I have some old Lyman books if you want me to have a look.

That’d be great! I don’t have any reloading books, thank you.

Says 225 gr bullet, H-Varget 45.0 gr. to 49.0 gr.

Old Lyman book suggests a max load of imr3031 under a 200 gr bullet is most accurate, with a mv of 2577 FPS in a 20” barrel. That’s 48 gr, so work up to it carefully. For the 250 gr bullet (didn’t show a 225), the most accurate load was a minimum load of imr4064, which is shown at 40 grains.

Also shown was the 150 gr psp, with most accurate being a min load of imr3031 of 45 grains. The heavier bullets were said to be most accurate, and the 150 the least accurate.

This is an old Lyman 46th, so data is old, so work up loads with care. As for the powder, I have always been a fan of imr4064. Fireman’s suggestion of using Varget, a newer powder than anything in the old Lyman book, and with a heavier load density, which should let you avoid compressed charges, is probably the way I’d go. Similar burn rate to the imr4064.

Back when I hunted with a 35 Remington, I lusted for the greater effective range of the 358.

H-Varget is very temperature stable, as well.

Not only will it hold MV, which makes a hold in trajectory, a load worked up in fall temps, will not become over pressure in summer temps.

While recently in the “reading room”, where I keep a Lyman 49th and a Hornady, I found to my surprise that the 49th had load data for the 358, and Varget was suggested for the 200 gr and IMR4064 for the 220 gr. I had wrongly assumed that only the 46th was where I’d find the data.

I’d shoot the 200 gr over Varget. That bullet was death to white tails out of my 35 Remington. I swear I track deer further after they are shot with my 260 than I did when I plugged em with a 200 gr CoreLokt.

Great round. I typically used IMR 3031 in my 358 under both the 200 gr. and 250 gr. bullets. You can get good loads of this powder in the case without compressing it much, unlike Win 748. I ran 42.0 grains of it under the 250 gr. Speer Hotcor spitzer and it was absolutely reliable. So were the 200 gr. RN Corelokt and Hornady spire point but I don't remember the exact charge. I did like the 250 grain load the best.
