Make it fun for your son to keep him interested, it's not always about killing something. Check out the Texas Parks & Wildlife website, they have good information on public hunting. They also have a program called "Mentored Hunting Workshops" that might just what you are looking for. There is also an APP for you phone with the hunting and fishing regs. available for Iphones and android - Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Annual.

Check into your sons school, they may offer an outdoor education class for him. It's not geared to 100% hunting, but gives the kids an alternative class to regular PE. The curriculum for most of the schools teaching it was put together by the Dallas Safari Club. My wife taught it for years and it was amazing after teaching the kids about bows and letting them shoot, how many Dads\Moms came up to the school to thank her, they didn't have a clue their son's\daughter's were interested in it!

not sure if this link will work.

You know, when I was a wee little one, the PE coach would bring a few shotguns to school once a month and we would shoot skeet :P The times they are a changing!

Why not start out with small game, like squirrels? Nobody wants to start out with small game anymore. You can learn a ton about fieldcraft by squirrel hunting, they (actually wild squirrels not city ones) can be pretty challenging, and they aren't hard to field dress. YouTube has plenty of videos on that.

Actually Skeet is alive and well in many high schools today. My son shot all 4 years on the Flower Mound High School Clay Target Team. Most of the schools around either have teams or are getting them. We did some light recruiting at our 7th-8th grade feeders as well to keep the pipeline going, they competed as "Intermediate" and HS were classed as JV and Varsity. You're able to earn an athletic letter for the sport as well.

Oddly enough, it didn't bring lots of hunters in, more than half of our shooters were first timers. The teams all shoot Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays.
