Doesn’t bother me. I have learned that there are certain people you just ignore on those threads and some that are usually within range.

Our place is a family property so its different, but we run cameras 24/7 we look at the bucks and together put together a list of shoot and don't shoot deer and go from there. We have shot a few that we missed the boat on, recognized our problem and tried to correct it for the future. We have only shot 1 buck that was a new never seen before deer and he turned out plenty old enough.

All I got from this thread is that it is BayouGuy's time of the month.

I learned a bunch from them and still do. Hunted for 20+ years and killed over 100 WT, but I’m still learning stuff from guys like stx.

Some of the wild crazy guesses are funny though. I really enjoy the “bad genetics” threads that are clearly injuries and not genetics.

This is us. We're running a 5.5+ on our place. It's my FILs land that I recently started helping manage, along with his son about 3 years ago. Prior to 3 years ago, it was just a rule of if he's mature, shoot it. A few of the guys were getting a little too relaxed and started bringing in 2.5 and 3.5 year olds regularly.

We changed the rules and said you do it again, we'll fine you xxx amount of dollars (which goes back to my FIL). It stopped the younger bucks from coming in to camp and a lot of those 2.5s and 3.5s are finally getting to the age that we've been wanting them to get to. I feel I'm typically pretty decent on aging them, but I'll get a few I'm off +/- a year.

Not all that much. If you know the habitat you should be able to get a pretty accurate estimate. Using the dentine method you measure what’s left of the dentine on the 3rd or 4th molar using a caliper and then check the chart and it will give you a very good estimate as well. Both are more accurate then a guess on a deer you don’t have a history with.

Still +/- a year

Tooth wear on our deer is off by 2 years on deer we know the age of. Teeth just don't wear down when most of their diet is protein pellets, corn, and cottonseed.
