I was sitting in a box / ground blind on a sandy sendero outside of Falfurrias. Over the years the legs had sunk into the sand so deep that you couldn’t close the door all the way. At about 9:00 AM the javelina started working the corn in the road.
Don’t know the reason. May have been smell. The biggest one in the group came to the back of the blind, stuck his snout inside and started to gnash his teeth. A few seconds later he walked off.
Hanging on the wall now. Not the only one I’ve shot but the only one I ever cared to mount.
This story has nothing to do with wild hogs. I’ve never been charged by or had a hog attempt to attack unless it was I’m a trap or a pen.
The only close calls I have had are with Javelina and I’m sure most of that was not respecting the animal and walking through a bunch to get out of a blind.

So if the hogs eyes are similar to the human eye, how do they see so well in the dark, and are able to run full tilt and avoid running into the trees? A human might be able to do that wearing night vision goggles.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

So if the hogs eyes are similar to the human eye, how do they see so well in the dark, and are able to run full tilt and avoid running into the trees? A human might be able to do that wearing night vision goggles. They have similar binocular acuity or clarity of image as humans and they don't have a tapetum lucidum just as humans don't, but they are red-green color colorblind and have the ability to see better in the blue/UV end of the spectrum than humans. Humans have a wider binocular field of view than hogs and hogs have a great peripheral field of view than humans. Specifically in regard to your query, how do they see so well at night? That is a really good question. Deer, coyotes, cats, etc. have the tapetum lucidum that gives those animals to see much better at night. I haven't seen any articles that address the issue specifically, although there have been tests that show that their visual acuity does decline in the dark, so they are apt to lose more detail than would that of a coyote, for example. So they are dodging tree just fine, but they probably aren't visually noticing the small truffles they are passing.

A human might be able to do that wearing night vision goggles. Hogs eyes are not designed for the dark and hogs are not nocturnal by nature. we have forced them to live that way. In areas with little to no hunting pressure they move freely all day long and in places with pressure they move more during the day than most realize. As for not running into things their eyes grow accustomed to the dark as ours do, but if you watch them fleeing an area with obstacles they do hit a few. I've seen them hit fences, people, farm equipment and trees. I believe they use their eyesight the best they can, their nose and memory when fleeing. think about this for a moment a blind person can easily navigate known surrounding with incredible accuracy. watch the following video, this hog is dead on his feet and he still locates the exact trail he came in on to exit. They are incredible animals for sure.

I watched the video twice, that hog sure ran a long way for being dead. His heart was completely gone{7mm mag}, if you watch closely he drops on video to the left of the screen. When a hog come in hoped up on adrenaline like he did they run unless head/neck shot. Here is another example of heart shot boar absorbing a 7mm mag and running about the same distance.

So the article claims a hog in the 300 LB class so im guessing in reality it was about 150 LBs.

I don't want to get between a Sow and her Piglets. Bad news.... Happened to me once when I stumbled on her bedding ground with her piglets while hunting quail and I took off so fast that I beat my track record when she charged.
