Yes, I have fond memories hunting deer in Louisiana with my uncle and his dogs. Never shot anything as the deer were moving faster than I could shoulder a shotgun. But listening to the hounds trail a deer coming right at you was pretty exciting. Had a cousin get treed by a pack of Razorbacks one time while deer hunting which was pretty exciting as well.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

No, I wouldn't hunt deer with dogs.
If it were a legal method I wouldn't have any problem with how others chose to hunt, if asked I certainly would not be a supporter.
From people dumping unwanted dogs in rural areas, or people hunting pigs with dogs using the same old " dogs don't know they're trespassing " excuse to newer neighbors that maintain a revolving door of 3 - 6 dogs they let roam free. I've spent more time the last couple years dealing with dog problems than anything else, it seems to be getting worse.
I'm about as sick & tired of dog problems as one man can get, and I love dogs.

I've never done it and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I love hunting hogs and rabbits with dogs. However, I don't see either of them in the same light as I do deer.
Even though we can hunt year round, I'm always looking forward to deer season. I think it's because I like to one to one nature of the hunt. I've always been a rifle hunter but have recently took up the bow to add a little more excitement/challenge to the hunt.
I would probably pass. But, as long as it is legal I wouldn't have a problem with other people doing it.

I wouldn't mind the company of a good dog in the blind, but I don't want to hunt deer using a dog to chase them by me or however they do it. I enjoy my quiet time in the woods.

Heck no. I wouldnt even hunt hogs with dogs. Everytime I see someone on TV saying oh wow how exciting I think HUH? What the heck is the fun in walking up to a hog and stabbing it. Boring!! Maybe I guess they do that to eradicate hogs but as a sport well I wouldnt even call it a sport. Same thing with mountain lions. Its not a sport to chase one up in the tree and shoot it. What is the sport in that? Go hunt it.

Hunting public land in Florida a few times growing up my dad would listen for dogs and try to position ourselves where he thought they were running to. Many times deer ran right to us

I remember when TPWD finally made it illegal in the few remaining east Texas counties. 'Had a customer at Deep East Electric Coop that was all kinds of p'oed. He was PWT.

I think hunting anything with dogs is sporting and much more exciting than the sit and wait game. To me good dog work is the ultimate in entertainment. I’ve never had the opportunity to train hounds but nothing thrills me more than seeing one of my pups point and hold their first covey. I get plenty of quiet time driving 300-500 miles a day making sales calls. I enjoy hunting with other people and am lucky enough to have deer hunted for the last 35 years and haven’t paid a dime to do it. I’ve also made quite a bit of side money guiding others to kill one. Honestly I’d rather watch another hunter get all fired up and kill a deer than shoot one myself.

Deer are pretty easy to hunt without dogs. I think hunting with dogs may just be a sporting thing like hunting pigs with dogs. I wonder if trespassing issues were a reason for making it illegal than any concern of over hunting.

I kept up with a fellow vizsla owner and bowhunter online for a while that used Vizslas in New Zealand for stalking Red Deer. He was very successful. This was in very thick cover and done in much the same way I had used my older vizsla Blaze for stalking hogs. Also back when I was interested in obtaining a Wirehair Vizsla I talked to a man who stalked Deer in Louisiana with his two Wirehairs. I would have loved to train a dog for hunting deer like that if it were legal.
As for hounds, I was a houndsman for a several years mostly with Walkers until most of the places I had permission to hunt grew into houses. My grandfather as a young man made part of his living with sight hounds in Oklahoma. And my Father as a kid worked for a relative that raised, hunted, and sold hounds in the back of Field and Stream magazine, so it's in my roots. I have no problem with the Deer hunters. It was a long time traditional type of hunting that once had it's place, but it is from a time when land was big, open to roam, and was more of a community or hunt club type of hunt. Too much has changed. Not something I would want get into today.

I don’t think running deer with dogs is good for the deer herd nor public perception of hunters.
I would never kill a deer over dogs unless I was in dire need of a deer.
If your bored with whitetail hunting, pick up bowhunting. It’s really the only way I will hunt whitetail anymore unless I am on a place with limited time hunting trophy bucks.
I do enjoy rattling though
Try a different method of take to rekindle your fire.
I killed two deer with a bow when I was living in Tennessee. The bow season was long and the rifle season was short. I like a deer to flop where it’s shot, bow hunting was challenging but not my thing. I also spent many evenings tracking wounded deer for the “Seasoned” bow hunters I camped with instead of drinking cold beer looking at a fire like it should be. My freind that owns the ranch I hunt on now has talked about taking up bow hunting in October but I discourage him every chance I get.

Yes. I've hunted deer, rabbits, and raccoons with dogs and always enjoyed hearing a good race. Nothing can get you more excited that hearing a group of hounds pushing a deer towards you. The anticipation of seeing a deer appear suddenly in the brush can set off a case of buck fever like no other. You know the deer is coming because good hounds never lie.
As a kid growing up in the Deep South, we enjoyed the best of both worlds. Deer drives in the morning and still hunting in the afternoon. And you never feared anything happening to your hounds because your neighbors valued their ability to push a track as much as you did. And competition for antlers was non-existent.
There was a time when men would spend all night listening to hounds run a fox or bobcat with no expectation to ever lay eyes on it. It was all about listening to the battle between the hounds and their prey. And it wasn't unusual to hear the houndsmen applaud the ability of the fox or bobcat to keep the race going.
Yes, it was the competitive chase for big antlers that ended the era when the chase was more important than the kill.

I've hunted criminals with dogs, but running deer with dogs doesn't do anything for me, but watching a dog pull a criminal down is pretty exciting.

I would not. I am a bowhunter at heart and love sneaking around undetected. We grew up shooting any dog caught chasing deer.

No nor would I hunt mountain lions with them, hogs hell yes I don’t understand why many differentiate between hogs and other vermin. I’ve seen a cat and 2 kittens kill 30 goats in one night and not eat a pound of flesh. I’ve only killed one long tailed cat and it was dumb luck. He was a 50 pound little guy that happened to be sitting in a rimrock cave. He swished that tail and caught my eye while I was driving by. I extinguished his life just because he was in angora goat country but it would have been much more fun baying him with dogs.

I think its day has come and gone as Sniper John pointed out.
Would have loved to have seen it in the old days, but I don’t think I would have any interest in it today.

Nothing can change a hunters opinion on dogs and deer any faster than a wounded buck.
The unfortunate fact is that even today, deer are considered "trash game" to a sporting dog's owner.
