On second thought it's a free barrel. Now is not the time to be practical. I'd make an Allen mag of some kind.

Too much work! (for me, that is). I want to work up a load and be done. An AI is fine, but in this fast speed 22 cal, 3000-3100 fps is plenty fast.

Save yourself the stress of this big decision and just give it to me.

We've told you before it is silly to put a Valkyrie in a bolt gun. It was made to sqeeze more speed out of an AR platform . Brass is hard to come by right now, and it cannot hang with a .22-250 or 22 Creedmoor which do work in a short action, bolt action.
You're hung up on this Valkyrie because it is new, not because of it's ballistics, as compared to the several, higher case capacity, 22 options that will fit in Chad's action with no bolt swap. Which by the way, the Valkyrie does not use the same bolt face as a .223, or a .308, Creedmoor, ect, it is between them in size. Same bolt face as a 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel.
Chad's switch barrel rifle is a .308 Win, so a Creedmoor or .22-250 will run on that action and that bolt, it would just be a barrel swap.

A fast twist 22-250 sounds fun. A 300 Norma is what I would build. Your point of less powder capacity is out the window though....

He's retired and bored, can you tell? As much as I give him crap because my OCD and his ADD don't work together real well. I will say he gets major props for shooting this past weekend in the Tropical Storm at Fossil Point.

Chad,
You should build a 224 Valkyrie. It would be so cool!

Your point of less powder capacity is out the window though.... A 22-250 with an 80 grain bullet with Varget will use about 30-32 grains of powder and run about 3100 fps. A 22 Creedmoor uses about 43-47 grains of powder with the same 80 grain bullet, but only yields about 3400 fps. It's marginally faster than a 22-250, and uses much less powder. Less powder means less barrel heat, less throat wear, and more shooting in a quicker time frame. I'm thinking of a prairie dog town also on this one. So, the 22-250 has 45% less powder, and only giving up 9% of the velocity (about 300 fps) of the 22 CM. I'd say that's a pretty good trade off.

Yep, there is a point where overbore just isn't worth it. I prefer efficient cartridges. I was joking about the 224 Valkyrie because I know it's not quick conversion. I do think it has a future in a bolt action because it's efficient.

I think that makes sense when you're thinking PDs. I'd just make sure to tote a .223 along also to give the .22-250 a little more cooling time.

Yeah, for your stated purpose I was in agreement with the 22-250. I was referring to a 300 Norma and the 90 plus grains of powder it burns. That is the long range hammer I would be putting the free barrel on if I was holding the voucher.

just build a .22-250 so a fire fighter can claim it was his idea, I still say the .224 Valkyrie is the nut.
