My go to caliber. I'm sure it will kill any north American big game. Bullets are easy to find too.

I believe you are right about it being able to take any NA game. It has been proven to do so time and time again. There are so many really good cartridges on the market but the .270 just keeps chugging along.

Love my good ole Savage 270. It's been a really good gun.

Obviously, one shot with a .270 will get it done on whitetails; so will my new Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmoor. The black plastic stock is not nearly as pretty as the walnut on the Winchester, but my shoulder is a lot happier after a range session.

You do know they make slip-on recoil pads, right? Put it on, shoot it, take it off, save your shoulder.

Nothing wrong at all with a .270, my uncle killed probably 30 WT with a Model 70 and I used it for a few years too.

My "go to" rifle for this season is The Savage 6.5 Creedmoor. The slip on pads work fine, but they lengthen the pull and discolor the wood beneath if left in place, so I pass. I am a long time fan of O' Conner and probably have every book that he authored, many of them out of print.
My personal all-time favorite is the .257 Roberts and I have a Winchester 70 and a Ruger #1B in that caliber. I have discovered that a whitetail will not run very far if hit correctly with a wide variety of calibers...the .270 being one of many.

Old age and treachery beats youth and stupid every time!

When I decided I NEEDED whistle a custom rifle....270 is what I went with. I usually hunt deer (axis and whitetail) and pigs, so it's perfect for that. Have a safe full of guns, that patiently wait for their turn to come out of the dark. The 270 keeps stacking up game and I'm beginning to realize that I could get by with just a couple bolt actions.....but that's no fun rifle

I have hunted with my .270 for over 40 years. In the last few years I have drifted over to other rifles/calibers, but if I had to sell all but one, I would keep the .270.

Great round. Had it in a floated m77 a long time ago. Weirdest gun ever. Eratic groups. Got rid of it. Honestly every 77 I had even floated with a timney was'nt a good tight consistant group shooter. Way better luck with 70 or 700

That’s odd

I have a mark II I had bedded and floated and it will shoot cloverleafs

I hunted with a .270 for a few seasons and it killed a few deer no problem.

Only thing wrong with it was it wasn't a 30-06..... bolt

How many comp shooters use the twenty 7 bullet? I see alot of 6mm and 30 cal comp guns. Just sayin. I know the 270 is a great round, just did'nt experiance it in a consistantly accurate rifle. The m77 thumb tang never kinda grouped in the same spot. Felt like launching bottle rockets. The 70 I had in 7mag sporter at 300yrds and .308 varmit at 100yrds. were the best I've seen. Same hole with the 30 and 3 shots in a racket ball at 300 yards. The m77 not so much. Im sure the small bore heavy 77s are nice. Just real heavy.

No one ever accused a tang safety ruger of being a match gun.

Problem lies with the rifle not the caliber.

I've been hunting with the same pre-64 Model 70 .270 since I was a small child. My grandfather gave it to me when I was 8, and I shot a deer with it that season (actually maybe the best deer I've ever shot). I love that gun. Feels like an extension of my body, and (not to brag) it's basically an automatic point and kill exactly when/where/how I choose. Shot countless deer, hogs, etc.

Anything ever happens to that gun, I'll have to hold a full blown wake and funeral with a long mourning period.

Don't blame the cartridge because you couldn't shoot the Ruger well. That's on you.

No blame on the .270. The GUNs! Not me were just ok or not good. A friend had a .270 in the model 70 that shot 2" 200 yard groups. I had only one and it was finicky in the model 77 in .270. Different scopes, new trigger, all kinds of ammo, different shooters. Just was not a consistant rifle. It was a camp gun that got the reputation of make sure it's a only a hundred yards or closer. The sporter weight 77s just dont group good in my experiance. They are just hunting rifles though, right? Dead on is a good reasurance if you miss an animal. Makes it easy to delete that trouble shootin question in your mind. Maybe it was the shooter or some tall grass or a limb or super high wind. Those are always better than an inconsistently shootin rifle.

Countless animals and many years with my Rem. .270 Already told my oldest grandson its his when I pass. My favorite caliber by far in a bolt gun. I almost feel like Im cheating when I take something else out on a hunt.

Owned mebbe a dozen or more Tang Safety M77's in several LA calibers...learned a trick from a gunsmith customer of mine that seemed to help lots of them with accuracy issues. My customer said the facotry tension on the 45* angle middle receiver screw was usually waaaay too tight when he worked on one of my guns & would asctually bow the middle of the action a tiny scootch...said to loosen it up to Zero Tension, go to the range and tighten in 1/2 rotation's with RP/WW/Fed Premium ammo until it stopped shooting in different places and showed some consistency...and then take out the barrel's bedding block or glass bed the the action and barrel & change out the trigger if you wanted to take the next step.

Last one I bought used in 1975 went to Doc's in Carrollton who told me the purpley/red tint to the receiver told him that the gun was a SR # series that used non Ruger made barrels and don't get you hopes up for better than 2" groups at 100 yards with factory ammo. I was able to tune the loads to a little better than that but it had other issues with the ejector and went down the road when I traded it to Barber Boats for a Yamaha SS Prop.

One of my old lease pard's still has the pair of mine and his tanger 270 77's and they still shoot RP 130's right at an inch using the middle screw settings I left them with in 1978, although he did have the triggers tuned. I hope his wife remembers me when he pass's, those guns have a lot of memory miles on them for both of us.

My go to, I got a model 700 BDL for high school graduation. I have killed 30+ deer, 4 pronghorn, 1 elk, 3 mulies, and I wont even guess how many pigs and 'yotes. I have other rifles, and it is mostly retired these days. But I pulled it out this past season and killed a big bodied cull buck, it dropped and never twitched!

Wiley Coyote has had the issue too. Thank God!! Like bottle rockets for me. Climbed, danced, curled, ect. Like a scetchy woman. Should'nt be so hard to have good group theropy for the money. Heck the off the shelf wood 77s have the freakin barrels pressed into the wood. Heat that up with 3 and try it along with the factory lawyer trigga
