Guy on here a few years ago had several lever guns w/ scout scopes on them & they looked great..
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

My kids started out using iron sighted rimfires as did I and everyone else I know that’s my age(58). I believe learning that way makes one a better shot. There is more than one way to skin a cat though.

I know lots of deer have been shot with open sights, but I think with kids, give them every opportunity for success, and I think a low power scope does that. This will mostly be my rifle, but will double as theirs too.

Good suggestions.
I am also in the camp of considering doing without a scope for that rifle. 100 yards is not that tough with open sights (might consider a ghost ring peep) and it sure makes the rifle more handy to carry/use. An added bonus is not having to worry about scope getting knocked off. I should have added that I plan for my daughter to hunt with this rifle as well, she’s 5 now, but will be ready to hunt in a couple of years, and I think a scope would be best for that. My sons are more comfortable shooting open sights. They shoot their BB guns every day and don’t have near as much trouble getting on an animal with the iron sights.

I think the Leopold would be perfect. I have a Burris FF II 2-7x35 on an old 740 30-06 which I like and should still be in your budget.
I hate to admit this, but I put a Bushnell Banner dusk and dawn 1.5-4.5x32 on a NEF youth model handy rifle 243. My 8 year old at the time was deadly inside 100 yards with this rig. Grand daughters may be using it next year. Best $70.00 scope ever made. Makes a great truck gun, short, safe and sits on the dashboard in a little zipper case just fine when you need the seat for extra passengers.

I like the Banner scopes. I've had good luck with them.
