100% agree

Go spend some time at a patterning board. It'll change your mind, especially when you realize the center of your pattern isn't where you are aiming, or at 40 yds you have gaps so big in your pattern that could cause misses and/or cripples. No doubt practice at anything will make your success rate much higher but, I can assure you that all chokes and shells are not created equal. It will vary from shotgun to shotgun, but that definitely doesn't mean you have to use an aftermarket choke with $25/box shells. On the contrary, when I pattern mine, I intentionally pick 4 or 5 shells that aren't going to run $200/case. But I do appreciate cleaner burning powders and pellet uniformity.

I don't know how you could say chokes are overrated... Practice is important, but so is knowing what you're working with. I agree with 68A.

Practice is important but I also feel that having a good choke tube for the type of hunting you are doing is.....

Your obviously with EMI. They have been so deceptive with marketing over the years that I rarely buy their products anymore unless it is on clearance or a super rebate. That company is always doing things like changing shot or shell design without changing the product name or by using somewhat deceptive plays with words which makes it difficult to know what one is really buying. It always takes some research to figure it out.

While we have you, what density shot is currently in the Hevishot Duck and is it the same for both the 12 and 20 GA versions? Same g/cc as the goose versions?

If money were no object and I could buy one shell for all my hunting, not just waterfowl it would be Kent Tungsten Matrix. I do a bit of road trip hunting for a lot of game in different places. That is the one shell I do take the $ hit to buy for that special hunt or bird. For example I used them during my last two Sage Grouse hunts. In my older shotguns they pattern the same as any primo lead load and they hit birds like lead. But for general waterfowl hunting I do use whatever the cheapest #2-#6 steel load available is. I do also reload for my 10 GA #2 tungsten for Geese and #3 steel or #5 tungsten for Duck, but the question was what my favorite waterfowl shell would be. Kent Tungsten Matrix in #5 or #6 would be that shell. If you go to any of the big stores that sell it and look at the customer reviews they are always phenomenal and don't read like shills, so I am not alone in this belief.

I've gone through several brands over the last few seasons. The latest I've tried are the Kent SilverSteel in 3" #3's.

I have liked them so far and will be using them this season as well.

shells and chokes they make today are very good, they work great. So after you find the "best combo for your gun" are you a better shot? You might kill few extra birds a year. You are only going to fill a strap if you know how to shoot or go learn how to shoot. I have a lot of dove hunters come out to my place every year you should here the excuses why they can't hit a dove its the gun the choke the shells the wind the sun in my eyes its really not any of the above its your ability to shoot. If you learn to shoot you will kill more birds. I borrowed a shotgun last year it had a skeet choke in it I shot a duck a little over 40yds the guy I was hunting with could not believe I could shoot a bird that far with a skeet choke I told him practice practice practice

If it bleeds I can KILL IT

2 3/4" or 3" #3s, manufacturer doesn't matter, my 870 shoots them all very well.

I disagree that the brand doesn't matter to me, it completely matters.
Some are simply not the quality.

Two seperate issues. If you can't shoot it may not matter. An excellent shotgunner that optimizes his shot size, pattern and shot for what he is doing is considerably more effective.

To the OP, I like 3" 1 1/4 oz #2 and buy estate when I find it. For the $ it is a good value. If price was not a consideration I would shoot #2 or #4 Kent tungsten matrix. I view them as the best on the market but generally more than I am willing to pay.
