Had several bucks show up this afternoon. I hadn't seen the melanistic buck in a few months.

Very neat. That is a first for me, I've never seen one of those before . I agree with SH, I'd like to see what he looks like in a couple of years.

I didn't notice it until I down loaded the photos. Hopefully he will be back and I can get a better shot
of that.

We had a few black and white one's near our old lease near Garden Ridge and have had a couple on our place in Hays county. In Comal I had a decent size 8 but I was real young and didn't know if they where protected or endangered. Didn't even know they existed until 1986.

Good looking buck. I have a friend that hunts up near San Marcos, he sees them all of time. I have never seen one

Those things are all over dripping springs. My buddy has a couple resident ones that live in his yard.

Great picture. Have only heard about these before. I would love to see one on an early crisp morning emerging slowly out the brush line.

I saw my first melanistic around here about 25 years ago and this is probably the best buck I have seen. Not sure if they just don't develop
better racks due to genetics or if they are killed before having a chance. Hopefully this one will keep coming back and I can get a few
more photos of him.

I read somewhere that the melanistic deer make up about 5% of the total population in Comal county. I see maybe 3 or 4 a year.

My FIL shot one years ago near Buda, in Hays county. I saw one hit by a car near Canyon lake a couple of years ago. Evidently they're not uncommon in parts of central Texas.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I read a report a while back that said there are apparently more melanistic deer in Central Texas than in the rest of the world combined.
Very cool to see in person!

There are several around my house, doe and buck but never much size to the bucks. Had one (narrow six point) a few years ago at 15 yards drawn back but was going to wait till he got bigger. Then AR's hit and he had to walk after that. Haven't seen him in a few years.
