We always considered it a trash fish when I lived in Florida but I'm not sure if people eat them or not

Consider them trash fish as well but have ate them a couple times on camping trips, not very good even when camping IMO

Was fishing lake Fork with a buddy quite a while back, caught about a 3.lb no clue what is was? There was a fishing guide in another boat real close that pulled up next to us and he told me that it was a Grinnel and they were great eating He said put them between two cedar planks, smoke them for two hours then throw the fish away and eat the planks

Grinnel.

My vote for the hardest fighting fish in freshwater. I caught one in a creek once that was about 32" long and weighed over 13 pounds. I'd walk past 3 pound bass to catch one of those. They will eat anything you throw at them as long as it is right in front of them and slow.
They are quite a handsome fish when they are in clear water and about to spawn. They will develop a spot on their tails, like a redfish, and have a bright green hue to their scales.

Hard fighting sons of guns for sure. Lots of fun on light tackle. We catch them in the bayou behind the house with fair regularity. Great challenge for the 5 year old.
Agreed on above, they can be a real pretty fish when they are colored and spotted up.

They are invasive.. you need to kill everyone of them if you use the meat or not.... With fish like Tilapia you can be ticketed for returning it back to the water... and must gut them on site.. I would bet the same holds true on a fish like this...
Oh they eat good nothing wrong with the meat only the cook most the time

Oh they eat good nothing wrong with the meat only the cook most the time Sorry Nav.....They are native to Texas and don't have to be killed like talapia. They are a "rough" or non game fish though. You're thinking of snakehead, they look similar and are invasive. I'm not getting all flower child on y'all either kill if you like to. http://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/species/bowfin/Distribution With the exception of the Appalachian Mountains, the bowfin is native to the eastern US, ranging from extreme southeastern Canada to the Gulf Coast. In Texas the species is found in the Red River, San Jacinto River and Sabine River systems, as well as the downstream reaches of the Brazos and Colorado rivers.

I hooked into one at Lake Fork one trip and it absolutely trashed my spinnerbait. I had to throw it in the trash it was so bad. Put up one heck of a fight for a few seconds that it was on the end of my line.
