How would most of you rate this country for quail hunting? Too thick or not?

Looks good to me. When those leaves fall it would be perfect!

Our place is thicker and has plenty of birds but can be a pain to hunt/shoot.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

a little thick but there are likely birds there. Ideal habitat is considered to be 10-20% brush. This looks closer to 30-40%. Grass looks right. Looks like there is a pipeline easement. I'd try along there first.

It should hold lots of birds. Hunting it will be tough until mesquite loose their leaves. I would rate as a 8 or 9 for potential numbers depending on ranch management. The ease of hunting is a 4 and maybe 5. Real hard from pictures to tell how thick mesquite really are. I sure would not want more mesquite or bigger mesquite. That being said I would definitely drive to take a look at it if it was available to lease with doable terms. Not asking just trying to give my true feelings about what I see.

The place looks wide open compared to some I've hunted.

The problem I have with the thick tall mesquite is shooting. Its tough to kill bird in that stuff. And it's harder to see the covey down. Many times it'll be a quick covey shot and that's it.

That's horrible, you will never find any birds and the dogs will get injured. Best to leave it to me to hunt it for you.

2 years ago I had a lease on the Ford ranch in Brady. Bird numbers were good but always ended up shooting at birds flushing from the "other" side of an oak Mott. Also lost sight of dogs several times. That's when I got beeper collars for my dogs for the first time ever. This year I'm planning to trade the beeper collars for GPS. .

The country looks good to me. GPS systems lets you hunt birds instead of hunting for the dogs. Only way to go.

When the leaves fall off those 6 or 7 foot tall mesquites, its going to feel a lot more open. Those shorter mesquites dont choke out the undergrowth much either. Looks real huntable to me.

Pharmvet - The place I hunt in Kent County is thick like that. A lot of birds and tough shooting.

I use GPS and beeper collars. I use the beepers on them to call them close if needed -- if they don't respond to the whistle. I just started using GPS collars last year.

It is so nice to know where your dog is at all times! Best investment I have made in a long time!!

GPS, you'll never understand why you waited this long. Best tool for bird hunting ever.

What is your preferred GPS collar system? And why?
