For me and my son in LOUISIANA IN September. We are going with a GW friend of mine from there. This is mostly for my son, but neither of us have done one. I know enough that it's not like tv. We are going with a trapper that has lots of tags to fill so we should come home with maybe a good head for my son, do some fishing, and bring home lots of meat. He can't wait and is pretty happy about the upcoming trip.

Have a great time. I've done it once. Very neat experience.

Here's a trick for baiting gators.
Get a large package of chicken thighs.
Place them in a large bucket with a lid.
Let them sit out for at least 5 days.
*Wear gloves when handling the chicken. The stink won't come off for days if you don't.
Get a large sheet of florist foam. Minimum 2" thick. Cut the foam into 4" x 4" squares.
Get some dacron fishing line. Cut into 10" - 12" lengths. One for each piece of chicken.
Now sew the chicken thighs to the foam "blocks".
Place back into the bucket until ready for use.
Once you select the area you are going to hunt, place the chicken / foam blocks into the water.
The chicken block will float. this method makes it hard for other critters in the water to eat them.
Come back the next day and "catch" your gator(s).
I got me a 9 footer with this method. And the area I selected to hunt was LOADED with Gators.

Why wouldn't you sew the chickens to the foam before they get rotten then let them sit for 5 days? Am I missing something?
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Have fun, we do it every year at the farm in La, it's a blast to take people who have never been.
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Here's a trick for baiting gators.
It's more common to hang your bait of choice a few feet above the water, when they lunge up to grab it, they essentially set their own hook falling back in the water. Charlie

You can buzz one of these in front of one at night and catch 'em. I was frog gigging one night with a coonass buddy of mine and got to see the show.

We use to catch gators for fun in FL when it was a slow day on the lake fishing. We would throw out a shiner on a cork and when the gator would go for it we would reel in fast as we could I was always amazed at how damn fast they were. We hooked about a 7 footer one time and it pulled us around the lake for quite a while as we tried to wear it out we were I. A canoe.
