When I'm actively scanning I just use my eyes but if I see a deer and want a closer look I would use my rifle or I had a instance earlier this year I was hunting and saw something moving in a tree and couldn't figure out what it was and turned out to be a possum
But until just a few months ago I didn't even own a pair of binoculars but I'm still a beginner hunter

Heck yeah if I see a buck that might be the one and he is threatening to move out of my area, but otherwise I use binoculars!
