I'm looking at trying to build my own wireless hog trap trigger. I found some components that I believe will work and will cost less than $100 with a $5 a month wireless plan.
Has anyone done this recently? Any advice? Do you think this will work?
Here is what I think I can use along with some sweat equity:
- $5 Prepaid Alarm SIM Card for GSM Home Security Alarm System + GPS Tracker by SpeedTalk Mobile - $8.99
- SUMLINK Gate Door Opener Operator with SMS/Dialing Remote Control,Suitable for Home Warehouses Parking Places and More - $35.69
- uxcell DC 12V Open Frame Type Solenoid for Electric Door Lock $17.12
- SOCKiTBOX Model 330 BK Weatherproof Electrical Box, Large - Black by SockitBoX - $17.49
Subtotal (4 items): $79.29

Update.. The instructions for the remote Gate Door opener read like gibberish. It took me a full day to figure it out. I work with offshore resources so I have some experience with documents written by people that don't speak English as their native language. I almost gave up and was about to trash it all. But then I figured it out. I have now tested that it workes out in the field :-) So I'm ready to get this set up for my hog trap. The Solenoid was not what I was hoping for so that won't be used for this. Now I just need to get a working release that is 12V DC capable. I have ordered a trunk release mechanism that I think will fill that requirement. Once I get this all worked out and tested I'll post pictures and an update on how it works. Oh, and I had to buy a 12v AGM battery that I got for $19.99 off of eBay. Note that I am using a Spartan GoCam wireless game camera that I have had in the field for several months. I get pictures sent to me in less than a minute from when they are taken. I hope to use this when I see that there are hogs in my trap and only trigger the trap door when it is convenient for me to go get them since the trap is an hour drive from my home. This is an example of when this would have been useful for me to have this remote trigger as they did not hit the manual one that night. I was awake and just waiting for the trap to trigger the next picture showed an empty trap and the hogs leaving.

Update. I got it to work. Total cost not including labor is about $150. I'm going to put it out in the field today and see how long the battery lasts. I am also looking at hooking up a solar panel to it but just want to take this one step at a time. The white caulking is to create a dam in case water gets in from the opening where the catch enters the box.

Relays and door poppers from car alarms will help you out.
It's not long distance but I've used multi channel car alarms (with alarm not wired in) to fire door poppers on traps, lights, calls, and even remote run the feeder from my stand 100 yards away from the feeder. Couple of 12V sealed acid batteries and small solar panel keeps it ready.

looks good, maybe bigger trap Now that I have this working and can trigger it from my home over 100 miles away, I will begin working on a bigger trap. That will be the next project :-) Here it is deployed. Now I just need to wait for some hogs to show up. Note I have it holding the release bar that is spring loaded. So once I send the command to release the cable the trigger bar will be pulled back by the spring and drop the doors. This trap has 3 doors.

When my controller burned up I lost interest in my remote. I ordered a controller last night gonna keep it off the bottom this time. Looking forward to some pics of hogs in your trap.

I have been wandering how to do that. What towers do the SIM use? My concern would be would it work at my lease. I use Spartans Gocams that are Verizon currently.

I have the Spartan GoCam with Verizon too. But this trigger setup is using a SmartTalk Sim card. Checked that coverage first to make sure it would work. You can also look into getting a High Gain antenna to extend the range. I just ordered one as I am planning on putting this all in a metal ammo can and think that will require an external antenna.
You can use any cheap Alarm Sim Card. The one I have has cost $5 a month and that gives me about 200 Text messages per month. I can't imagine I would set that trigger off that many times in any one month.
So far even with all the testing I did I used just over 50 text messages to the trigger. And I did a lot of testing.
I have not seen a hog in my trap since I relocated it. I may need to move it to a more promising location. I'm dying to send the command to close the trap.
I also just bought a solar panel and regulator so I don't have to worry about depleting the battery.

Close call this morning. Maybe they will start entering the trap in time for me to trigger it for this weekend and I can have a big BBQ for the 4th

Update.. The Gate Opener Remote On/Off Switch I used still works but will no longer work at the end of this year due to the end of 3g support. There is one that works with 4G but is much more expensive. I'm about to buy it and see if I can get it to work at my remote location. This is the link to the 4G Gate Opener Remote On/Off Switch at a price of $135 https://www.amazon.com/KiaoTime-GSM-RELAY-US4G-Output-Control-Contact/dp/B01MZ0VFAA

I have no experience with your current opener, but thats the one we are running and it is working super well. We do have relatively good cell service I'll say, hope it works for you though!

Update... I went and purchased the KiaoTime GSM switch and got an AT&T Sim card for $25 for three months use @ 0.25 a text message.
Good news if it worked great this weekend at every remote location that the 3G would not work. And I did not need to add any special antenna setup.
I'm back in business with my remote trap trigger. Just cost about $100 more than the 3G setup but much better and reliable coverage.
