Anyone hunt near comstock? Just got a small place off 1024 and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas of how the place is.

I'm in VV between pandale and Juno. We've got some pretty good quality free range whitetail, as well as the occasional exotic. I hunted in San Saba for over a decade before VV. I don't see as many deer at a feeder now but there are some bruisers walking around. I miss turkey hunting but I guess the bigger deer make up for it. I also like how open it is. Gives the ability to sit and glass, especially during the rut, that isn't possible in other places with trees.

How many acres? I'm 20 miles pasted comstock. Conditions have been good for the last couple of years, So it should start paying dividends soon.

There are a few of us on the board who hunt in that area, us included. We're also off of 1024. Like S.A.hunter said, the conditions have been good the past couple of years, and we've noticed a definite uptick in quality and quantity since we bought our place four years ago. Lots of free range white tail. Tons of doves. And the number of quail has definitely increased. Game cam pics from this year look promising so far, too.

Yep to the doves, quail, and the turkey numbers have gone up. The big pita out there are roaming herds of goats. If they find your feeders they will sit there for days. If that is the case you will need to set up feed pens. We are on 100 acres, and it does the job.
Good luck. Oh look for the Val Verde thread. That's where you will find us. IT used to be a long thread with a bunch of good info, but for some reason it was deleted so it was started up new a couple of years ago. Should still be good reading for you.

Thanks guys. I have set up a feeder and a water guzzler using a 275 gallon tote as the area seems not to have much water I hope this helps draw more deer on my tiny place anyone have problems with hogs?

1 hog in 5 years of trail cam pics, and it was at my neighbors property 3 miles down. That being said my land might not be like yours. I know up towards rocksprings area they are covered in them.
How big is your feeder?

How far off of 90 are you? I'm pretty much just off 90. Bunch of Canyons, and ravines. I have seen the occasional mule deer in the area, but never in season. I saw a trophy mule one year during doe season, And even at 500 yards his rack looked Majestic.
Forgot to mention we have tons of javelina.

We haven't had any hogs on our property yet, but we're also fenced which helps. We have had a couple of javelina, though. Neighboring landowners who aren't fenced, though, have had a decent amount of hogs and the aforementioned wild goats. And I managed to run over a wild hog on 1024 just south of the Juno Cutoff one night about a month and a half ago. Thank God for grille guards.

There are some goats on the place I hunt, but they are not our main nuisance. Hogs are a menace. Or they were. This spring we built a handful of hog panel pens around feeders. The deer are already hammering them. As stated above, there's been really good rains the past few years and this year is looking good so far. Here's to hoping the Rains stop at the right time so the deer hit feeders hard during the season!

Here's to hoping the Rains stop at the right time so the deer hit feeders hard during the season! This is no joke. If you want to feed deer, build BIG pens around your feeders, or you will deal with hogs and goats tearing stuff up. I use a minimum of 7 20 foot panels. No shorter than 36 inches. And yes, let's hope it dries out a little in November and pray it gets cold! Lots of deer made it through the season last year without ever being seen because it was such a mild winter.
If ducks had horns I'd probably be a duck hunter. I am a horrible deer hunter. Probably the worst. Ever.

Hogs have been filtering down between the Devil's and the Pecos for years. From what I have seen there are more on the west side of 1024 than on the east side of 163...if that makes sense.
HINT RE: feeder pens with goats around. Some chicken wire around the cattle/hog panels will help keep little goats from sticking their heads through the squares of cattle panels and dying there. Just wire it on with rebar ties.
