I've seen it as low as about 100 out in the country and as high as almost 1k in the rich suburbs. I'd say about 300 to 500 is what other more reasonable price would be.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

I have two dogs with exceptionally dirty mouths. One is 14 and well beyond tooth cleaning age. I have been brushing their teeth with a walmart battery powered electric toothbrush and baking soda. They allow me to do it without a fuss and it seems to help a lot. Their gums are hard--stopped bleeding after a week and the tartar does not seem to be building up. If you do this, you need to use baking soda because some toothpastes are bad for dogs. I've paid $300 for a cleaning.

I have never had a dogs teeth cleaned in 50 years and probably never will. Never had a problem either. I hate cleanings personally and would never subject my dog to that.

I don't either and don't plan to. I know two people that lost great dogs because they didn't wake up from being knocked out.

Bad teeth and gums can lead to heart trouble in both dogs and people. What you want to watch for is when the plaque buildup is so bad it is pushing on the gums. Once you have serious gum disease you may have heart issues and increase the chances of loosing the dog when it is put under.

If you do this, you need to use baking soda because some toothpastes are bad for dogs. I've paid $300 for a cleaning. They make toothpaste specifically for dogs. It's cheap (and probably more tolerable for the dog than baking soda ) . Regular brushing, dental chews, oral rinses, etc can help to prevent needing a dental later on in life. With that said - some dogs are prone to bad teeth and others are not. One of our labs - teeth brushed 4-5 times a week, rinse given when not brushed, 2 years old - teeth still get dirty. Other lab - same thing - same diet - 3 years old - whiter teeth than mine.

Once you have serious gum disease you may have heart issues and increase the chances of loosing the dog when it is put under. One was about a year and a half old english bulldog and the other was 3 year old Yorkie. No previous issues with either, vet talked them into a cleaning and 2-3 hour later their dog is dead. To each there own. I will have to pass unless there is a problem.

I just sit mine down and scrape any tarter off with a small flat head screwdriver. They don't like it, but they know I am the boss and it will be done. Once you learn how to do it, it is really easy and takes about 5 minutes per dog.
I will charge you $500 and an extra $500 if the dog is bad or bites me.

Change vets. Shouldn't be a problem putting young dogs under for cleaning. Mine ALWAYS checks heart and respiration before he works on the dog. I suspect that a lot of these cases where the dog dies while the teeth are being cleaned occur when the bet leaves the dog unattended or has an assistant do the cleaning while he does something else.

$260 for my 56 lb. flat coat retriever mix. First time was at 7 years old. Some dogs are more prone to gum disease than others. My German Shepard was 13 before she died, and never needed it. All of my dogs have always gotten daily dental chews, and the equivalent products before they were called that.
It really is important to have a competent doc check their gums on a regular basis, if you don't want your dog suffering in silence.

I've had a lot of dogs through the years and have never had ones teeth cleaned. I've never known anyone that has either. I have an old lab that refuses to die, (every time I get ready to put him down he rallies.) None of my bird dogs have ever made it to retirement, for some reason or another. My old lab keeps holding on and still has great teeth, that's the least of his problems. I would have to say it's a waste of money.

Cost is going to vary from place to place and what all is done. Bloodwork, xrays, possible extractions, etc. will add to the cost. Bloodwork (in my experience) is often declined but it is important to know before a dog is put under anesthesia. How many humans are put under anesthesia with out bloodwork being done? I'd say very few and probably only under emergency situations. Anesthesia always carries risk. No matter how attentive the vet is, things can go wrong. I've only ever lost a couple patients under anesthesia. I lost a calf once that we were getting ready to repair a hernia on and a hit by car dog that wasn't very stable but needed surgery anyway. The calf still bugs me a lot. Calf appeared very healthy on exam, we had an exact weight for drug calculation, I always check drugs multiple times. And the calf still died. As for dental disease, I've generally seen much worse problem is small breeds...yorkies, poodles, etc. I've literally had some of those dogs teeth fall out when the tartar was cleaned off. Also, some dogs you can push on the gums just above the tooth and see some whitish discharge....that's pus. I always think when I see a mouth that nasty...this dog probably licks his/her owner in the face.

Have heard teeth cleaning cause deafness I might have been asleep that day in school but I don't think I've ever heard that. There has been an association, in cats, of blindness and dentals. Heard a lecture by an anesthesiologist where he said it had to do with the amount of time the cats mouth was help open. I don't remember the physiology but some how it damaged the nerves. I don't work on cats now though so I wasn't playing the best of attention.

I wonder if this has to do with the size of the dog or if it is because of the lap dog diet.

I wonder if this has to do with the size of the dog or if it is because of the lap dog diet. Some of both. They don't have the jaw strength to chew big kibble, and they're often on a soft food diet anyway. The act of chewing the bigger kibble actually helps keep tartar away.
