NP, do you currently have a rifle chambered in .458 Lott? I was wondering what the recoil was like. No Choctaw, I do not. 416 Rem is as big as I go. That's the only one I based off of reading the preferences of others - as an elephant gun. I have never and will never hunt anything bigger than cape buffalo. I think I would like to have one for no other reason than to just have it. There is a lot of mystique in those big African dangerous game cartridges. Yessir there is. The Lott is fairly new though (1980s I think). The Nitro Express cartridges, .416 Rigby, .404 Jeffrey, and even .458 Win Mag (introduced in the late '50s) plus several others have more of a "nostalgia" factor. I handled a Rigby PH model in .416 Rigby at the DSC show. Even though it's a current production rifle, the "feel" of it was wonderful - balanced well, locked up tight, solid as a rock. If I ever have an extra 15 grand laying around I sure would love to have one.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I had no intention of being taken seriously. I was simply illustrating that I too could come up with a list of ten cartridges that were unrealistic. The 28 Nosler is the most glaring example of poor judgement in the original list, but there are others nearly as bad. 28 Nosler is probably in the top 3 on that list! How is it poor judgment? The 6.5 ICL Magnum is a great cartridge for western game, but I wouldn't put it on the list either. There are far too many negatives to adding something rare or unusual just because of some minor ballistic advantage that mostly exists in the head of the gun writer. What **real** advantage does the 28 Nosler have for the **average** hunter? Wouldn't the average hunter get 99% of the benefit of the 28 Nosler simply by using a 7mm RM instead? If you like the 28 Nosler, why not put the .300 Jarrett on the iist? Why not the .270 Weatherby? For that matter, why not the .30-378 Weatherby? The 28 Nosler is a niche cartridge designed for the enthusiast market. The 6.5-284 and the .280 AI fall into exactly the same category. For normal hunting purposes, they do nothing better than the 7mm RM, the .300 WM, the .30-06 or the .270. All of this is really besides the point. Any American hunting cartridge list that doesn't include the .30-30 and the .308 is a joke.

It has been a while since I have shot 459 Winchester and 458 Lott, but to me they were no worse than 3.5 inch turkey loads in my Beneli SBE. It was not that bad shooting from standing position, where you could roll with it but from a bench it is stout.

I've spent most of my life hunting out west and my favorites reflect that. My top five in order are.....
1) 300WM 2) 25-06 3) 6.5 Creedmoor 4) 22-250 5) 28 Nosler

some thing you are all missing, he is an outdoor writer. we are supposed to believe what he says. Had an uncle that 20-30 elk with a 243, of course that was the old 243(much stronger) he also neck shot every thing. That's interesting...the .243 used to be much stronger? evidently! 6mm remmy probably

.243 Win vs. 244 Rem (later designated as 6mm Rem but built and touted as more of a varmint cartridge at the time) Doesn't seem like that would explain it.

In most Commercial loads the Remington is a touch hotter but virtually identical to the better marketed Winchester. Hand loads...Remington takes the cake Both 1955 releases I give a man a rope to help him out of a hole, but Apparently you like kicking chairs to see him hang

Whether the facts hang people or not is entirely up to them. For elk (at ranges anyone should be shooting elk with such a small bullet), you can't fit a hair between the .243 and 6mm rem.

Makes sense now that I re-read it. My dad thought 30-06 was God's rifle, Grand father thought 7mm was God's rifle. Both would kill their bulls back in some hole resulting in two day plus pack out. Ironically looking back my grandfather killed most of his elk with 30-30. My dad with 308.
Grandmother would hunt from the front poach of the cabin. Her little 243 which is now mine had no issue filling her tag every year. Kind of funny hindsight. She still has the biggest bull of the family . She had a hell of a garden also.

Absolute [censored]! Someone is trying to SELL something that I am NOT BUYING! What a bunch of crock.....no way some of those should be included and no way the old 30/30 should be excluded. In over 50 years of hunting deer and larger I've only hunted with 3 people that used a 30-30. I bought a bolt action 30-30 from a guy on here. I have made it into a youth gun for my grandson. I think that the 30-30 is a perfect youth/small person gun. It shoots a 30 cal bullet, has no recoil to speak of and is deadly accurate in the 788 bolt action. I work for a major gun company and suggest d this year that we consider offering ''tis caliber in a youth model gun. If you go to the northeast US you will still see a lot of people hunting with a lever 30-30.

For years a lot of hunters in Pennsylvania cut their teeth deer hunting with lever action 30-30's. Still a very popular gun today. It's said that more deer have been harvested with a 30-30 than any other rifle.

If you add in the poachers that hunt year round, I bet you would find just as many animals killed by 22LR and 22S. A lower noise factor should make them a popular round. Loss of game is not a big concern to them, so the 22 would be a good choice.
