It's a very good set up, but here's the reason I like my drain up a few feet from the gate. The dogs will not dump near their pens. You have to wash the droppings all the way to the back and you slab stays wet. The back of my pens are seldom wet.

Yep, I will definitely change the design of my next kennels. When I built these, I had never kept dogs in kennels and was not familiar with the habits of kenneled dogs.
