Back in the 80s when I was doing my degree at Sul Ross, the thing to do was to apply 2,4-D (as I recall) but it had to be done 40 days before bud break. This was according to research done at Texas Tech. If there was another method that worked, I just do not recall it. I've been out of Range Management for a long, long time, though. Haven't kept up!
