Calf appeared very healthy on exam, we had an exact weight for drug calculation, I always check drugs multiple times. And the calf still died.

Doc was it rompem?(xylazene+ketamine if yall call it somthing else) seen that drug do some scketchy things. Typically great on big critters though...

i was a vet tech for a long time, had to do a lot of the scraping on teeth when dog was down. I HATE IT, minture poodles
Have the worst mouths i have ever seen. Though an infected root on a jack russel that caused abcess up into sinus cavity was BAD...

Danger is there with every time you go under... ive only been there to lose one like that. Old Schauzer, propathol and then gas... just got too deep on gas, or idk... just stopped ticking... i was tore up, known the owner since the day mom brought me home from the hospital( literally she brought my folks dinner). Only time i teared up in front of patient...

If your paying 400+ with no exstractions or anything then i think you need to shop a bit...

xylazine (Rompun) isn't used as much in dogs now in general. It is still used, but there are newer drugs in the same class that are a bit safer, but price goes up dramatically. Even though its use in small animals is declining, there are still a lot of dogs sedated with it routinely. It can have significant caridiopulmonary depression.

Ketamine is still used very routinely in small and large animals. Its pretty inexpensive and has a huge safety margin. It can actually increase an animals heart rate, which, when used with xylazine, reduces some of the negative effects of the xylazine. Used alone it causes a lot of muscle rigidity so its generally used with a tranquilizer of some sort to provide muscle relaxation.

Yes the calf I mentioned before got xylazine/ketamine.... I still don't know why it died exactly. I've anesthetized a lot of cattle with an estimated weight and had few problems.
