I have been wanting to buy and install a new winch on my Kawasaki 4010 Trans Mule. The times it is the heaviest loaded net of people on board is a 3 dog box, water, and gear. What should be my minimum pull weight on any winch I purchase?

The general rule is 2x the weight of the vehicle and gear, so if you generally run 2k pounds, get a 4000 or 4500 winch.

Just tell the other 3 to get out and push! Seriously though, Shotgun Willie is right. 2x of your normal running weight minus passengers. They can always get out to help lighten the load.

I don't think you can go by vehicle weight when you have four wheels stuck in the mud with the axels dragging. Get the most you can find and hope that you will never need it.

Bill has it right. The worst mud actually sucks your tires into it and creates a vacuum effect that needs to be broken.
Buy bigger than you think.

Agreed. I have a 2000 LB winch on a 500 pound four wheeler and it won't pull it out in thick mud. Get bigger than you need, you won't regret it.

A snatch block doubles the pulling power of a winch so that would be 4x the vehicle weight.

I agree with Oxner, same reason why we put a 3k warn with 4,500lb synthetic on our honda rancher. Havent had to get help yet.
