Yep, #4 steel shot. One shell will give you a lifetime supply of the steel balls, lol.

One of my biggest Savage peeves is the crappy bolt extraction timing that can crop up in some rifles. If you have ever had that issue, then you don't need me to explain it to you.

I'll stick with my Tikkas, Winchesters and Brownings.

And the occasional Weatherby and Ruger.

To each their own.

Yes, to each his own. They certainly have a reputation for accuracy. And the Accu-trigger seems well received.

I simply don't like the way they look. The action all the way back on most models is ugly to me. I wasn't aware of the ejection issues.

Yep. Backend looks like a bank vault door or something I'd see on a 16" naval cannon.

Hate bladed triggers too. If I keep my Ruger American it will be getting a new trigger.

That's been the biggest kicker for me, they're just plain ugly. With that said my little B-Mag shoots lights out!

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Savage, tika it doesn't matter. Shoot what you like. They all have flaws. Pick the ones you can live with. Tika is what the cool kids are shooting for now. Give it a year or two and it'll be something else. If you want ugly, you should see my 700 with a barrel nut with a houge stock.

I hope this thread will help convince the ones that currently own Savages and don't like them start selling them off for pennies on the dollar since they are so ugly and hard to maintain. banana

It been a year, or two, or five, and they haven't subsided. Zero tomes have I seen anyone go from a Tikka to Savage. The opposite is very common though.

I used to team rope with a guy that that rode a horse that would win the ugly head contest, his answer "I don't ride the head, "we either won or placed in the top 3 75% of the time" just now I went and grabbed 4 savages out of the gun room, 2 pre accu, 2 accu, cycling the bolt as slow as I could, not one failure.

I'm with GLC, can't wait for everybody to determine they need to get rid of their savages and move onto tikka.

Maybe they're like ugly women-just don't tell them they're ugly and you can keep on using them without any ejection issues. smile

Scanning through this thread my thought is some of y'all are walking through a car lot full of chevy trucks expecting to find a corvette. A typical Savage rifle was not meant to compete with a Tikka or be prettier than a Remington. It is a best accuracy for the dollar kinda rifle. Nothing more.

I only own one Savage rifle. Crazy accurate out to 250 yards. Cheaper to shoot than any other Deer rifle I own. I love the feel of the accutrigger. The hideous laminated thumbhole stock fits me perfect. Some year's big game seasons it is the only rifle I go to now. Never had a bolt or extraction problem, but then why would I. It's a smokeless muzzleloader. wink

Yeah and at one point it was remington.

And decades of stories of accidental discharges from Remington 700, that don't seem to go away, which has made plenty of people quit them, or never buy them in the first place.

Things are changing at a more rapid pace, now. CNC machinery becoming more prevalent, more people shooting, and they're producing ways to solve problems they see, and improve upon existing designs.

Curtis Customs is a prime example. Rem 700 footprint, best extractor design we know of, stong ejector, 3 lugs, 60 degree bolt throw, action and pic rail milled from one piece of steel. He took the best of several actions and combined them into one action. The big boy manufacturers are doing similar work.

Could happen. Could also be an improvement on what they already have. Only thing we can do is watch and see. Then reap the benefits of their improvement, or another company doing a better job. But as it stands right now, they are the best bang for the buck.

That's still dependent on preference and it's intended use.

Ford, Chevy, Dodge.

For my purposes I prefer and intend for it to chamber easily, shoot well, and eject. Tikka has two of three over Savage. Both shoot well, one of them does all three well.

Yes, I'm resurrecting this old thread.

I finally got my hands on some extra bolt head pieces (extractors, springs, ejectors, etc.). Saw a video on how to replace all the bolt parts and looked fairly simple. I go and try to remove the pin that holds the ejector in place and it is stuck. I didn't have a punch small enough so I tried to use a small allen wrench. Pushing by hand and gentling tapping with hammer was no use so i tapped it hard. The pin is still stuck and now my little allen wrench is bent.

Not claiming I hate my savage but this is VERY annoying.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

We're you compressing the ejector closed, with an empty case?

I have no issues with Tikka, probably a pretty good gun, except that I can't work on them as easily as my Savages. I know that I could have one built but to me that is where the fun ends. I drag raced a lot. I built all of my own motors, trannys, rear ends and chassis. That is where I got my satisfaction, yes I enjoyed driving them but it normally did not take long and I would sell the one I had and begin another build. For me it is always the build and try to push it as far as I can. Then I normally got bored and do another one. Same with guns. I If I had someone building them it just would not be as much fun and for sure it would be more costly.

Why would you buy something with many negative reviews when you have similar options in the same price range without any of those reviews? (Read: Weatherby)

I've shot Savage trophy something somethings. Less well made than my Vanguards and the T3s I've shot are more well made than em. All shoot GREAT in the right hands: Weatherby in mine, T3 in the owner's, Savage in their owners'. Haven't noticed the ejection problem with aforementioned Savage rifles but haven't paid attention to it.
