I have no idea if John Wayne is actually referring to high fences or not.
I'm just giving the real quote below.

The quote is from a book by John Wayne’s wife Pilar Wayne
John Wayne: My Life With the Duke by Pilar Wayne

The real quote reads as follows:
John Wayne Quote:
“A man's got to have a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job.
There is a difference in hunting wild game and shooting wild game.
A hunter will only kill an animal that is allowed to roam free.
A shooter will kill an animal that has been pen raised and not allowed to roam free.
I have no stomach for the later, no matter how large the pen is.”

I searched for this quote and could only find the beginning part of it where he is talking about doing a good job. I cannot find anything relating to hunting, or HF ranches.

I know that there where HF ranches in TX during his day, but they where few and far between compared to today. There where no whitetail deer breeders back then. They where almost unheard of anywhere else in the country. New Zealand didn't have them, but I'm not sure about South Africa.

Why would he be against something that was so rare that most peopled didn't even know it existed?

Everything about this quote screams out like a FB Fake News meme, made up to support a personal agenda by somebody against HF, and nothing about John Wayne.

As a side note, I have hunted both high fence and low fence.I have no problem with either.
Is their a thread debating canned hunts on here?

The previous threads about this reminded me of this movie clip.

What amazes me is why should any of us care one iota what someone in Hollywood says about the way we should live our lives?

I am amused the Hollywood types think they are so persuasive, but in the end, their agenda is to get paid big bucks for their endorsements and I would not doubt one bit that every one of them that makes any kind of political or positional stance on something has some financial reward for it either in the form of investments, or PAC money or some "charity" giving them money to say their stupid stuff.

Lets get real, no Hollywood person ever does anything like this without going through their agent, and someone needs to pay.

having said that and stepping off my soapbox, the Duke never said all that. No way. First sentence is his, rest if made up hogwash.

The Duke would never, ever, hunt a high fence area, put beans in his chili, or drive a Ford or Chevy truck. That's all there is to it, Pilgrim.

No one is disputing the quote on that magnet. He said that. Where is the rest of the quote - the part about high fence hunting - that you accuse him of saying? That's what everyone is disputing as untrue.

I'll argue with that. He would hunt high fence if the Injuns ran in there, he drove a Ford pickup, and ate beans in his chili because he wasn't some skinny jean wearin foodie metrosexual from Dallas! grin

Here's his truck and his saddle!

Tell me no!

The man who would run and jump into the saddle had running boards on his truck?

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Why not? There's stirrups on his saddle!

I thought his most famous quote was:

"Every man knows a 30-06 will shot a deer deader than a .270,"
-John Wayne

Which appears to be the entire quote.
