Made the trip down to the Powderhorn Ranch for a youth hunt this weekend. Had high expectations entering the hunt and had high hopes of filling the freezer with exotics. Shortly after entering the ranch you could immediately notice the immense amount of wildlife all around. Driving down the road you could see axis, sambar and a few whitetails. All types of cranes and sea birds in the marshes of matagorda bay. The ranch house in which we stayed in was an old house that was recently renovated and sat right on the shore of the ocean.
The first hunt we say in a ground blind with a wide view. Didn't see anything until about 8:00 when two axis does pranced across the field, not 5 minutes later outsteps a mature axis buck which offers a good shot at 60 yards. The .270 did the works and he piled up 20 yards away. The second hunt was much slower but started with us seeing a large sambar bull which looked really good, 45 minutes later a sambar cow appeared and disappeared very quickly. Then about 20 minutes later we hear loud crashing in the trees and we look over to see a very big sambar swinging his head in the tree doing a number to it. We decide we'll take him since he's the biggest we've seen so far. Once again the 270 did the job and he piled up about 40 yards away. What a task cleaning and quartering that animal was. We had to chop him in half completely in order to move him into the truck and haul him out. The third hunt had little expectations of killing a deer so we talked and enjoyed the wildlife and the nice weather. We were watching cranes when outstepped a lone axis doe at 260 yards. He quickly got on her and put her down in a pile.
A fantastic weekend with all great hunts and many memories that will be with us for a long time. The Powderhorn is an astonishing piece of land which will be great for public use.

Looks like an awesome hunt. Is that a draw hunt?
