Just not buying the reasoning for cancelling deer hunting there for 2 years in a row. Its limiting hunter opportunity/access is what it is, complain how bad feral hogs are but this WMA will only let you hunt them for a few weeks in the spring? What is the biological reason for limiting feral hog harvests?

Good question boss. would ask the same about Gus Engeling and their hogs. May be the same fellow running both WMAs?

Im not quite sure you understand the severity of this flood. At the Trinidad river gauge this was the second largest flood of record. But in actuality it was the largest flood on record. When every gate on Richland Chambers lake was open the Trinity river flowed north because of the amount of water dumped directly onto the WMA. WMA staff rode the area in boats and found deer stranded on "high ground" then the lake release happened which raised the water level approximately 6'. We are talking a 700 year flood with a lake release on top of that.

I would HIGHLY HIGHLY encourage anyone with questions as to how the WMA is run and questions regarding such to call the RC or Gus office.

Thanks for the Fishermans Cove info. That's good to know

Here are a couple of pics from the North side of the WMA from the flood. Pretty crazy high water.

That's a good pic but here is a pic closer to the peak of flooding. You can barely see the roof of the registration Kiosk in the background.

To get this back on track, I know Gunnels is a bowhunter, thats why I was shocked to hear him say what he did. As far as the deer density dropping so your just saying they all drowned? hard to believe they wouldn't not move to higher ground, and deer are surprisingly excellent swimmers.

First time glanced at this thread...
confused2 lots of different views...
years ago did a doe & spike hunt their...
The OSBWMA was a lease before it opened ta public... Way out of my price range...
They were talking bout flooding that area, had maps at store of what it would look like...
Spent many hours on river when it flooded, boat, canoe, & kayaking... They even turned loose turkeys that first year... Flooding pushed em out...
From Hoard Rd ta almost 155 it looks like a lake... At Hoard water betwwen both bridges & they had ta raise bridge on 14, while as a volanteer fireman went on a rescue call when some one tried ta cross old bridge & current swept it away...
Deer & hog population good... Actualy seeing more deer...
As said in different thread... WMA's limited hunts, for the $48.00 permit, (foodstamp) its archery only for deer, & just like with hogs, gives a sactuary...

Spent a lot of hours setting in a stand there back when it was a type II. It was tuff hunting but good memories. They sold that place and all of the other type II as a way for people that could not afford to pay $1500. For a season lease to have a place to go and that is what it was. I harvested a lot of deer there, and if you got one it ment something. Now it is draw only and they mange for trophys. Not nearly enough people get to enjoy it. Makes me sad. What is better one guy killing a trophy or 100 guys getting to enjoy sitting in a tree stand. The new 13" rule would mange it especially if it was bow only. I would like to see them open it up again.

Your not the only one that would like to see it go back the type 2 land, d@mn shame and with the new online draw system odds of getting draw are worse than ever. It been since 1999 that place has been draw only, and the last 2 or 3 years its been closed because of the flood damage, sure seems like a long time.
