Warthog or feral hog? South Texas. They got out of a game ranch a few years ago and started breeding. This trail cam pic looks the exact same as this warthog just without the tusk. What do y'all think?

I'm gonna go with feral hog, making my judgment off hair, snout, and ears....but I'm by no means an expert

The snout is what I'm going off of. It gets wider at the end and gets narrower at the nose. I have never seen a feral hog like that before. So I was thinking young warthog

That's a warthog. Chapparell WMA has some that came from neighboring ranches, any chance you are close to that area.
They are supposed to be great tasting.

Edit: the top pic is a feral hog. I read it wrong and was only looking at the bottom picture

The distance between the swell/splay of the snout for the canines and the tip of the nose is very short in warthogs, as seen in the pic you offer for comparison. The same distance in feral hogs is longer. Feral hogs may not always show that much swell or splay, but some boars certainly do.

Warthogs also tend to have a developed mane which is not seen in the UNK image. http://www.wideopenspaces.com/warthogs-turning-texas-coming/ http://www.chron.com/sports/outdoors/article/Warthogs-invade-South-Texas-6671689.php

So I would be more inclined to go with feral hog as well.

So you took this partial image off of Facebook? Can you show us the entire game cam image or was that all that was shown on FB. I am always dubious of selectively cropped images that leave out information that may be relevant or very helpful.

Do y'all think any chance it could be a feral warthog hybrid?

Quote:
Phacochoerus africanus [Warthog]
× Sus scrofa [Domestic Pig] In his description of southern Africa Anders Sparrman (1786, vol. II, p. 26), the Swedish naturalist and disciple of Carl Linnaeus, mentions that a litter of these hybrids was farrowed on a South African farm. He also mentions that Pallas had attempted to produce this same cross and failed.

http://www.macroevolution.net/pig-hybrids.html

Domestic pigs and warthogs have been in Africa for centuries together and the above reference is the only reference I can find that indicates a successful mating of these two animals that are not even in the same genus. It is possible that Sparrman was confused or misled on the matter. That after centuries there are not more known instances of successful hybrids, I highly doubt it is likely.

So you don't have the whole picture from the game camera? Other pictures?

That's what I would like to know as well. It would answer a lot of questions possibly.

The eyes ears and fur look like a feral to me. Have seen several hogs with the flared out part on their snout.

To me the hog itself doesn't look big enough to have that big of tusks

Eh, I don't think that's really an issue. I've shot enormous hogs with no tusks and smaller hogs with much larger ones.

Conversely, even young warthogs have tusks that come out from under their gums. That guy's don't.

This is the young warthog I was comparing him to. But this picture is at a better angle than the trail cam pic

Its just a feral hog (boar).

Mature (not a youngster).

The camera angle accentuates the lip protrusions where the 'Whetters' (upper tusks if you will) reside. There are NO large tusks present in the pic and that isn't what makes a warthog a 'warthog' anyway.

Male warthogs have two sets of 'warts' (one below each eye, the other farther down on the cheek), female warthogs have only one set (below each eye). We see no such warts on this obviously mature animal.

Everything about it...spells feral hog. Yes a better pic would help convince the skeptics, but this pic is sufficient, its a Feral.
