I've had very limited exposure to crow hunting. What I've seen of these birds indicates high intelligence making them difficult to hunt.
I read that they are at least semi-migratory and each fall I hear more and more of them on the creek behind my house.

Anybody out there have any history on crow hunting?

When im deer hunting and get tired of not seeing deer but watching multiple crows eat my corn

Crow hunting is a blast. I've used an inexpensive electronic call and an owl decoy to totally work them into a frenzy. Now what I haven't figured out is how to keep them coming back to the same spot after the first few shots are fired.

I noticed the iPhone has an app for Crow Calls. Would have to bluetooth it to a speaker.

FYI the rules changed about hunting crows. No longer can you just indiscriminately shoot them, they have to be in the act, or about to start causing damage to crops, trees, being a nuisance in numbers etc, etc.....The wording is pretty loose but be aware that it isn't like shooting pigeons anymore.

semi - migratory --------------- like doves,,,,, you have local birds and migratory birds ----------most "crow hunters''(if there is any such thing) hunt the migratory ones. Zachw hit the nail on the head,, they are smart,,, you dont normally kill very many before they wise up.

Oh and a foxpro call with "crow fight" followed by "crow distress" will bring those things in on a rope. I'm talking like 45 seconds to a minute after starting it they will be all over you if they are in the area.

They did add some rules not too many years ago that makes it difficult if done by the letter of the Federal regs. But in Texas I have never heard of it being enforced. The Texas outdoor annual wording never changed to include the new Federal rules either. Much like with waterfowl the Feds call the birds in your freezer part of your posession limit, but the State does not. I had not looked at the Federal Crow regs in a while and was curious too, so took a look. It's worse than I thought.

Texas is by "depredation order", not to be confused with "depredation permit". They are two separate things. Depredation permit is even more restrictive like no recorded calls or decoys.

The parts old and new I read that make it a PIA to hunt them in Texas. If enforced.

(b)(6) Each calendar year, you must attempt to control depredation by species listed under this depredation order using nonlethal methods before you may use lethal control. Nonlethal control methods can include such measures as netting and flagging, the use of trained raptors, propane cannons, and recordings.
(d) Ammunition. In most cases, if you use a firearm to kill migratory birds under the provisions of this section, you must use nontoxic shot or nontoxic bullets to do so. See § 20.21(j) of this chapter for a listing of approved nontoxic shot types. However, this prohibition does not apply if you use an air rifle or an air pistol for control of depredating birds.
(e) Access to control efforts. If you exercise any of the privileges granted by this section, you must allow any Federal, State, tribal, or territorial wildlife law enforcement officer unrestricted access at all reasonable times (including during actual operations) over the premises on which you are conducting the control. You must furnish the officer whatever information he or she may require about your control operations.
(h) Disposition of birds and parts. You may not sell, or offer to sell, any bird, or any part thereof, killed under this section, but you may possess, transport, and otherwise dispose of the bird or its parts, including transferring them to authorized research or educational institutions. If not transferred, the bird and its parts must either be burned, or buried at least 1 mile from the nesting area of any migratory bird species recognized by the Federal Government, the State, or a Tribe as an endangered or threatened species.
(i) Annual report. Any person, business, organization, or government official acting under this depredation order must provide an annual report using FWS Form 3-202-21-2143 to the appropriate Regional Migratory Bird Permit Office. The addresses for the Regional Migratory Bird Permit Offices are provided at 50 CFR 2.2, and are on the form. The report is due by January 31st of the following year and must include the information requested on the form.

I hunt them in Oklahoma sometimes after other seasons have closed. OK has a Crow Season that does not have all the depredation order requirements and are legal to hunt on most public lands there. Texas could also add a season if they want. See 20.133.

Back in the 60's and 70's the farm I was raised on for part of my life was 3 miles from the biggest winter crow roost in the United States. Twice a day they would leave and return. A black ribbon as far as see and a half mile wide for a little over an hour. I would be waiting.They are intelligent, they can distinguish between a man carrying a gun or a stick. They'll fly right over the man with a stick, not so with a gun.

They are a very smart bird

I lived on a farm outside of Arlington back in the 70s. The lady landowner hated them because they attacked her fruit trees so I set about trying to shoot a few of them to help. Easy to say, hard to do.

I remember one that I shot, I left him lying there for a while. A group of crows showed up and began what seemed like a "crow funeral" for their downed comrade.

I'll never forget that.

As far as getting them to come back after shooting, We placed Ann owl decoy in the open and worked them into a frenzy with a crow call using the fight call. Most of the time they're not so smart then.

the first one you shoot, ram a stick up his arse and stick it the ground, use any kind of distress call, will keep them coming..

So, I installed the CrowPro app on the iPhone and sat down on the back porch with the Bluetooth *device*. It was dead quiet out there.

Within about 1 minute I had 15 or 20 crows swarming the trees. It was incredible.
These things were like fire ants, outta nowhere.

I got my .410 and four shells out of the house.

Most important do not shoot the scout
