I've never heard that. It's pretty common in older, mature deer. At least where I hunt in South Texas. And not all mature deer have it. I'm not so sure it isn't from sparring and fighting during the rut. If you'd had your nose broken for 3-5 years straight, it would probably look like that, too.

I was able to locate the article below.

The photos that appear in the article show more severe cases of the disease, the origin of which biologists are still trying to determine. It should not be confused with the "Roman mask" appearance that bucks take on as they mature, as this is the result of the darkening of the hair on the face of a buck with no changes to the underlying structure.

I have a photo of a old buck that shows the disease as well that I will try to post.

Granted, I am not a wildlife biologist. Still, such swelling of the nose and face of mature bucks is not widely common IMO.

I believe his nose was probably broken since he has had it since we started getting pics of him. I will post a pic of the doe we called "camel nose" that I ended up taking last season that also had a broken nose.
