Did you give your friend a penny in return? I have always heard that when someone gives you a knife, you are supposed to give them a penny in return. I think it comes from some superstition that if you don't give the person a penny in return, the friendship will be severed. Anytime, I get a knife as a gift, I give the person giving it to me a penny. Old wive's tale I am sure, but with as few friends as I have, I need to do all I can to keep them.
